Amalfi Coast home base location
We, a family of 4 (parents with 2 teen girls) will be visiting the Amalfi Coast mid-April. Hearing different things in regard to best hotel location - we will be coming from Rome so looking for something more relaxing, less metropolitan.
Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi or elsewhere? Looking for a location for easy day trips and a town that will be "open" for the season (April 16-20). Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You haven't booked the hotel yet? You may be a bit late to be focused on the "best" location. You'll be there during the Easter holiday week... Palm Sunday on April 13, Good Friday on April 18 and Easter on April 20. The "season" generally begins around Easter, and these are coastal resort towns. Sorrento is the largest, and IMO Amalfi is the least drowning in tourists. I'm not sure what you mean by "less metropolitan," but there are smaller, quieter towns than these three, but, unless you have a very generous budget, I'm not sure what you'll find.

This is really not a poll-type question. Each village has it's pros and cons, and there are even more you have not listed. I'd look for one that has the best transit connections. Usually that is Amalfi. But it also depends on what you and your family want to do as well.
Sorrento is not actually on the AC. If you're planning on also maybe going to Capri, Pompeii, and other points, Sorrento may be a good choice. If you're just planning on beach side or some hikes (probably too early for swimming) towns east (Maiori, Minori) may be better. Positano is built into the hillside. Lots of vertical.
If you let us know what your plans may involve, and maybe a budget, we can direct your further.
But as Jean pointed out - you need to decide soon because of Easter celebrations.

Of those, Atrani fits the bill perfectly if you can find accommodations. It’s a charming town and is easily walkable to Amalfi, which is good for connections for transportation (ie, ferries) to other places along the coast. It’s just what you’re looking for.

I'd think that you're going to struggle to find decent accommodation for the Easter holidays. The smaller places like Atrani will fill up first and prices will rise once hoteliers see how much of a demand there is. Sorrento has much more selection and volume of places to stay, but again, better places go first. I'd book now without being too choosy about location. Anywhere along the AC will be good at this point.

I'm not sure about April, but Sorrento (which, technically isn't part of the Amalfi Coast) can get pretty busy. So can Positano. Look into Priano, Amalfi, and Montepertuso. I'm not quite sure what you're looking for in terms of things to do -- shopping, beach, sightseeing? How will you get around?

I realize it's a holiday week and seems there are options available. We are not renting a car, will tour by private car or boat, and are looking for convenience of location.
We will be stopping at Pompeii on our way from Rome so do not need that in our Amalfi itinerary.

If you're seeing lodging options that are acceptable, I'd jump on one now. If it can be cancelled later without penalty, you can keep looking, but you need to get something booked asap.
Getting around by car will be very time-consuming (but a bit faster than the bus). Getting around by boat means you'll want/need to stay in or very near a town where ferries stop, and you'll want to make ferry reservations in advance.
Wanting "convenience of location" depends on what's on your sightseeing list which you haven't mentioned. Anything in Naples? Capri? How many days do you actually have not impacted by arrival and departure?

I will be there the week of Nov 3. F, 70+, solo, public transpo. Was going to stay in Sorrento and go to AC daily. When I realized bus would take 1 1/2 and and for you the ferry at roughly about the same amount of time, I quickly switched to a hotel in Amalfi. Hotel Fontana is in front of the bus depot so I can catch the start of the bus route to Positano and the start of the bus route going in the other direction to Atrani, Ravello, etc. I usually stay in apts but opted for the Hotel as I did not want to do any more climbing the hills then necessary just to get to my accommodation.

I would go to Cetara..but maybe not for a first-time visitor to this area (??)
So far way from the usual tourist fray, accessible by Sita bus or car, great eating, I feel as if I am in the midst of a film set from the 60s when I go there, and I never miss a visit when I am in that area.....last time our desired hotel I Cetara was booked so we stayed in adjacent Vietri and ate in Cetara at night.....Cetara is like the A/C might have been four decades, or more , ago.....no big bus tours, no overpriced eateries, pretty beach.....for me it is the essence of the Amalfi Coast...last stop before Maratea for sun and sea, and food!! And NO huge gobs of tourists, like me!!
But I get it that first timers want to be in the middle of the tourist action.....I no longer crave that...
Do not forget Ischia, either!!!
