Amalfi Coast

I'm planning my first trip to the Amafi Coast this May, and I need a little advice on my itinerary:

Day 1: Travel from Rome to Sorrento
Take in the sites.

Day 2: Visit Pompeii. Return to Sorrento

Day 3: Visit Positano & Ravello? Return to Sorrento.

Day 4: Visit Vesusvius. Return to Sorrento.

Day 5: Visit Capri. Spend the night

Day 6: Return to Naples.

Does this sound reasonable?

Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive hotel in Sorrento & Capri?

Lastly, can anyone recommend a good travel agent on the West Coast?

Thanks.

I haven't been to Vesuvius, but I've been to the other places you plan to go and your itinerary sounds fairly reasonable to me.

The only thing I would change is the day on which you plan to visit both Positano & Ravello and return to Sorrento. I wouldn't really want to split a day between Ravello and Positano and then go back to Sorrento. There are some wonderful sites in Ravello that you won't want to miss and it is not so easy to get around on the Amalfi Coast. You can't take a train to Positano or Ravello from Sorrento. You'll have to take the bus.

I stayed in Sorrento at an inexpensive place: Lorreli e Londres, I believe is the spelling. It is recommended by fodors. I thought it was ok, but a little shabby. It certainly was inexpensive though. Around $70 U.S. in 2002.

Have a great time!

Ciao Veronique,

Your travel plans are totally reasonable and easyily done by public transport.

Hi Veronique,

You have a good trip planned.

Why do you want a TA?

You say you will *return* to Naples. Is this just for an overnight to fly out, or are you planning on spending time there?

Thanks for your responses.

Ira,
I thought a travel agent may be a good resource for hotel accomodations and any must see sites.
I'm heading back to Naples from Capri because I will be flying to Paris.
Thanks.

Hi veronique,

Look up "Hotel AND ,,," name of town or Amalfi Coast or AC for plenty of suggestions ant all prices.

All of the Fodorites together are more knowledgable than any one TA.

Also look up "Capri AND Naples AND ferry" for ferry schedules.

Hello Veronique,

We are planning a very similar trip this June, for 1 week based in Sorrento.
Note that Vesuvius isn't a full day. You get a bus from outside Ercolano Rail station, then a 30 min hike up to the crater from the car park. However, as we are planning to do, you can combine this with a tour of the ruins at Ercolano (Herculaneum).
We have booked Hotel Loreley. They quoted 95E per night for 2 people including b'fast. Although reports are its a bit shabby, the location is fantastic, for both views and transport.
I've done plenty of research into the area, so email if you have any queries.

While in Sorrento this past summer we stayed at Hotel Il Nido. It is up on a hill overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Some people shy away from it because it is not located right in town, but with their free shuttle we did not find this a problem. I just checked their site and their rates for a double in May are 98 Euro:
