Very Expensive:
1. Le Sirenuse (my first choice) fabulous views of the sea and Positano
2. Hotel San Pietro (great food, ambiance but staff is somewhat stuffy)
3. Santa Caterina, Amalfi
I have stayed at 1 and 2 in '98 and '00, but Santa Caterina is also highly recommended.

Moderate:
Villa Cimbrone, Ravello
(fabulous views, but not actually on the sea - high above) the best grounds! A little less accessible for day trips. I do plan to stay there one day to just R&R. I have walked the grounds on both trips and love the atmosphere.

Le Sirenuse and the San Pietro are both truely beautiful properties.

Economy: Villa Rosa was recommended to me by a friend and some locals in Positano. I am told it has very good views and a great breakfast delivered to your room on the patio.

You can get there by train and bus or train and taxi. Have a great trip.

Several years ago, had a wonderful stay at L'Ancora Hotel, right next door to Sirenuse, and much less the cost. Same views, large airy rooms with balconies and verrandas. Totally awesome views. Check out www.travel-italy.com/hotels/amalfi_coast/

Don't know if it fits your budget, but when we were there, it was great!

Villa Rosa is across the street, upside, from Le Sirenuse, and the view is even better, and prices much lower! It's a wonderful place to stay! It's a long climb up the stairs to the reception area, and I imagine that's why it is inexpensive.

Good evening, Betsey Would not the
Sorrento side of the penisula have a
better view, as it faces the Bay of
Naples and Vesuvio, other than the
open sea on the Amalfi side..????
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il...

Betsey--do you seek "beautiful" hotels, or hotels w. beautiful views? there are beautiful hotels in Ravello/Positano, but perhaps the most beautiful view is from Hotel Tritone near Praiano. literally built into the cliff about 1000ft above the sea, it offers some of the most sweeping hotel views on the A. Coast. each room has a private balcony w. to-die-for views. for pix, visit:
charmingitaly.com/tritone

I don't know if this interests you or not, but we rented a cab driver in Naples for $150 for the day and he drove us to Pompeii right up to the door and waited for us, then took us on all the back roads to the Amalfi Coast to all the towns and then back to Naples for the night. Fast, but fun.
