HOLY SMOKES TELL ME IT ISN"T TRUE!?!

Planning a trip to Capri in March and read that the Blue Grotto is only open in the summer!?!
Is this a nightmare?
People keep talking about how beautiful Capri is, better than Santorini? What features does Capri have that make it so beautiful and what town is better to stay in?

have been to Capri three times and have never seen the Blue Grotto. who wants to get on a jammed boat to go see a cave? capri is wonderful because of it's elegant, but casual feel and pretty strolls. afternoon life at the small town square in capritown is wonderful. it is not as scenic and spectacular as santorini, but still very pretty.

it's a small world isn't it? we both have the same name although our e-add. is slightly different!
Thankyou for you help! At this time I have a terrible dilemma, which is to figure out whether to stay one night on Capri or just day trip there.
Many on here say Capri after dark is a must, why?
I am thinking of Capri for one night now although basing in Sorrento for all three nights i have in the region is less stressful.
Input?
Is Capri worth a day trip only?

I think you can have a perfectly wonderful time on Capri w/o seeing Blue Grotto.

Dear xxx,

I day tripped to Capri in April last year and found it to be very crowded with tourists just like myself so I wasn’t impressed. My reason for going was the San Michele church with the majolica tile floor which I did get to see and wasn’t disappointed. I believe the beauty of Capri is found in the scenic walks. If you day trip there isn’t much time for the walks since I believe the last boat back to the mainland is around 4:00. We did go on a rainy day which probably wasn’t the best time but in the early Spring you probably will find a lot of rainy or cloudy days near the water. The Blue Grotto is only open when it’s sunny otherwise you can’t see the blueness of the water. So, even if it’s summer and the day is rainy or overcast you won’t get the effects of the blue water.

To maximize our time there we hired a car and driver. Without a guide you have to wait for the bus and funicular both ways. It was economical since there was three of us splitting the cost. There’s lots of guides for hire as you step off the boat. He took us to Capri and Anacapri and on a short tour of the island and pointed out the sights. We also stopped periodically to take photos. We had 2 hours in Anacapri, after which we met him again and went on to Capri for about an hour and had our scenic tours on the way up and on the way down. I probably wouldn’t go to Capri again unless I could spend 2 nights there and walk around the island.

I don't know where it is now, but there was a fairly recent thread on disappointments in Europe. Someone mentioned the Blue Grotto and I replied that I'd head a lot of similar comments. However, then two different people said they really loved it but that, as I recall, the key was going when it was sunny and before 3:00. One person said they felt the light was even more beautiful than in the photos.

I've never been there, just passing that along, and you might want to try to find that thread and read their comments.

We heard all the advice to not go to the Blue Grotto and ignored it. So glad we did!!! It was beautiful and you will really miss something if you don't go. Capri is very crowded in May.
