Regarding a taxi fare from Ravello to Salerno being about 90 euro. Really? We need to leave Ravello and catch the train from Salerno to Rome. Another method -- bus?-- between Ravello and Salerno? I thought it would be a whole lot less than taking a taxi to Naples, but it hardly looks like it.

Patrick: you can travel from Ravello to Salerno for about 3 Euros if you take the SITA bus (with one connection in Amalfi). The trick is to get a good connection in Amalfi and arrive in time in Salerno to catch the train to Rome. This means that the train can't leave too early in the morning.
Based on current schedules, the first SITA bus leaves Ravello (Monday through Saturday only) at 6:05 a.m., and (with some luck) you might be able to connect to the bus leaving Amalfi at 6:30 a.m., arriving Salerno at 7:45. If you miss this connection, the next bus leaves Amalfi at 7:00 a.m.
There is also the ferry from Amalfi to Salerno which cuts the travel time in half (although I don't think they run so early).
A taxi down the hill to Amalfi will alone cost nearly 30 Euros.
The SITA schedules have been updated for winter 2003-2004 and will likely be updated again for the spring/summer.
