The drive from Strasbourg south to Colmar is beautiful. Get off the superhighway (Autoroute) and take the slower back roads. Colmar's old town is a collection of half-timbered, ancient buildings that flank meandering canals. See earlier comments on this city. Although not in Alsace, the city of Nancy offers some wonderful sightseeing. The Place Stanislaus and the the palace built by the Polish aristocrat, Stanislaus Poniatowski, afford some of the best baroque sites in France. Nancy was almost completely undamaged during the two world wars.

Hi, Denise, <BR>The small towns in the vinyards are don't-misses in this area. Riquewihr, Kaysersberg...some are a little touristy but they are drop-dead gorgeous, good small hotels and restaurants, and you can walk around the vinyards, which ought to be in high color in October, and I imagine the chances are good for some new wine at that time. A little Gewurztraminer, an onion tart, a walk in the hills...what a good place to be.
