Between 20th of May 2017 and yesterday, Alitalia Flt. 615 from Boston to Rome has not had a single cancellation or significant delay.
On Sept 01, he return flight (614) was diverted to Keflavik and arrived in Boston 3 hours past its scheduled time.

Just flew Alitalia back from Rome roundtrip. Curiously, I think Alitalia codeshares with Delta so you see both airlines listed for the same flights when you book your reservation. In our case, we flew Alitalia to JFK to Rome and Delta back Rome to JFK but it was one reservation. I agree Alitalia has slipped. I don't think the bankruptcy filing is much of a factor since it has been going on for a while. I always think the European airlines will be better than American and Delta but not this time. The Delta flight back was much better than Alitalia. I usually do not mind flying Economy but the Alitalia flight was brutally cramped and it forces everyone to lower their seatbacks making the situation worse. Meridiana is a cut rate airline offering discount flights from JFK to Naples. It has terrible reviews so I paid more to with Alitalia/Delta, not sure itw was worth the price. If the service stinks with both carriers, you might as well save the money.

I live in a place where direct flights to Europe are still not an option. (Maybe next year.)
In the meantime, I am accustomed to making multiple flight changes. There are direct US to Rome flights from Atlanta, Philadelphia and I think NYC. Maybe one of those would be a better option for you?

We also just returned to Boston from Italy on Alitalia on September 24. flight 615 BOS-FCO and 614 FCO-BOS.
Alitalia has been in bankruptcy for years, so that is not a real issue.
I have previously defended Alitalia here based on reasonable to good experiences on previous flights.
Nevermore.
On the international flights, the female cabin crew members were surly and literally, physically pushy. The men were just uncommunicative. On 614, one toilet was out of service before we left the ground. The seats were dreadful, legroom non-existent. Just a horrid experience going over and we dreaded the return the whole time were were in Italy.
Two domestic flights were just fine. Aircraft were Embraer 190, plenty of legroom, good service. Go figure.

Well, we just got back from Italy tonight and I just wanted to catch up with this thread now that I've got actual Alitalia experience.
We had three flights -- Toronto to Rome and then a short flight to Turin and coming home it was just the one Rome to Toronto flight.
All both flights going out left exactly on time and the one coming home was delayed by about 15 minutes. Everyone we dealt with in the airport was friendly and helpful and the lines seemed to move efficiently. The planes were clean and I thought the FAs, both men and women, looked fabulous in their uniforms. They all seemed pleasant enough and there were no incidents of note. I've certainly had much more surly FAs on Air Canada. The meals were OK -- your average airline food. We flew economy and yes, the seats were cramped but I can't say they were moreso than any other airline I've flown. We lucked out with our seats on both of the long flights because we were just the two window/aisle seats so we didn't have to contend with a third person beside us.
Most importantly, our bags arrived at both ends of the trip!
So there you go. On the basis of this experience alone, I'd fly Alitalia again. But you never know. I've had frustratingly cancelled flights, lost bags and killer FAs on both Air Canada and American Airlines. Horrible experience trying to use a voucher on United. Really, let's face it -- once you buy that ticket, you just cross your fingers and pray.

"Last month I flew to the USA via Air Canada, and I must say that the flight was enough to make me swear off Air Canada, and to never again pass through Toronto."
I agree with that one as I have also flown with AC and don't want to have to repeat that experience. There were all kinds of hitches of which one was when I got on the plane to fly from Europe-Canada-some state in the U.S. before finally getting home to L.A., well, while in flight, I mentioned to the flight attendant that I had ordered a special meal, but was told that they didn't have it, but that I was welcome to bring my own food. Just unbelievable. So, I ended up with no food from Europe to home and I had started in Copenhagen, so a very long, series of flights before getting home.
Boy, how I wish that either Singapore Air or ANA Airlines had flights from L.A. to Europe.
Happy Travels!
