Algarve first time visit

Please I need some help. My husband wants to take me on a special 50 yr. birthday present. We have traveled all over the world and think Portugual would be interesting.I know virtually nothing other than seeing the beautiful villas on the Algarve area/ Question would the first 2-3 weeks of October still be warm enough for a Villa with a pool? Average temps for that period? Any specific villa web rental site to use? Good english speaking of the locals? Any one city better than the other/ and any one Villa rental recommendations? I used everyone's recommendations for our Amalfi trip right down to the room numbers and it was a trip to die for!! Thank you all for the help/ Rosetta

Hi Rosetta,
We went to the Algarve last October and the weather was changeable, we had a day of rain and the temperature did enable us to lie by the pool for a couple of hours but it was a bit chilly in the evening and we couldn't really sit outside without woolies.

One night I even lit the log fire.

We went to Carvoeiro and stayed in a beautiful villa, in fact we loved it so much that we are going back to the same Villa in July, I think it will be a bit hotter then..

I tried to arrange the villa independently but with car hire flights and villa it was cheaper to do it as a package through www.thomson.co.uk.

But there are many independent websites for Algarve, just google and loads will come up.

We didn't like Albufeira, it was full of fat tattoo'd soccer shirt wearing folk ( and that was just the women)

Just one tip.. if you drive ensure you carry Passport driver licence and car hire details at all times. I forgot one day and ended up having a chit chat at the local station. The policeman was rude and arragant, until he discovered from my passport that I was Welsh and not English....he suddenly turned into human. Albufeira was the scene of Englan football fans fighting in a recent competition and he obviously had mixed feelings about the English.

Good Luck

We visited the Algarve last July and really enjoyed it. We stayed in Praia da Luz (near Lagos) in a villa (Casa Canario) which we rented through this company:

http://www.holiday-rentals.com

The villa complex (Porto Dona Maria) also has a hotel (more of a condo feel than hotel rooms) on the property with lovely sea views and a large, beautiful pool. The hotel offers specials all year round if you contact them directly. Villas are rented through the owners. We encountered few people who did not speak English.

Have a great trip!

Where you stay is dependent on whether or not you rent a car. If you stay in a villa in an out-of-the-way place, a car is a must. Likewise, if you stay in one of the smaller towns a car will be needed to see other places and to shop. If you were to stay in Albufeira, it is possible to do without a car. Be sure to find a place that has central heating. It can be cool in the evenings at that time of year.
