My advice is to take the train (about 2.70 euro) then a tram to Dam square. You can buy both tickets right at the airport. VERY easy! I think a taxi is about 30 euro. I don't kow how much the shuttle bus is.

The train is in the main terminal.

As the posters say, get the train. It gets you directly there no problem. If I remember right you dont even leave the airport, as the enterance to the station is in the airport exit area.

A one-way ticket on the KLM Shuttle (or a Connexxion bus) costs 11E, if I remember correctly. Sometimes you have to sit on the bus and wait until more passengers join before leaving the terminal.
We're going to take the train/tram route ourselves this fall, when we return (only taking a backpack each).

To expand on the reply from elberko: I clicked the link to the Fodor's DESTINATIONS page. The info there is a good overview of your travel options, but the prices are out of date. I was in Amsterdam 2 weeks ago, and took the train from the airport to Centraal Station. It now costs 3.10 euros. Don't know if they are all like this, but the ticket vending machine I used took coins only, so be prepared!

If you have luggage, the train might not by very practical. Although it's an easy trip from the airport to the train station, you then need to get to Dam Square: it's a fairly long walk with luggage (probably 1km, on crowded streets), and the trams are a pain to negotiate if you have a suitcase.

The KLM bus is not a bad option, and neither is taking a train to the station and then a taxi to Dam Sq. Figure about 35-40 Euros for a taxi from the airport, about 15-18 Euros for 1 or 25-28 Euros for 2 for train + taxi, or about 10-12 Euros per person for KLM bus.
