Airfares to Russia?
I'm going on a river cruise in Russia in June. The best airfare I found is $1875 (from Baltimore). I may be able get it through the cruise line (Intrav) for a little less than that. It seems outrageous to me, but this is the first time I've priced airfare to that destination (much more expensive than flying to Asia!). Is this a bad time to be looking? Should I wait awhile and check again? Any suggestions for getting a more reasonable fare? Thanks!

That is quite high, depending on where in Russia you are flying into or out of. I just booked a client from Washington DC-Moscow, St. Petersburg-Washington in late June for around $1,050 (which I also thought high), and booked myself a round trip from NY-Moscow in mid-June for around $900. Where are you going to/from in Russia? Often you can get better fares from agents rather than online (as there are no non-stops between North America and St Petersburg, often the rates quoted reflect incorrect routing or fare categories).

althorn: We are looking into a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg in spring or fall. Would appreciate hearing about your plans, a little about the cruise line you're using, price, etc. We have several brochures and, at this point, feel Amadeus Waterways is the best way to go.
I haven't really researched airfare yet (we live on the West Coast) but think you possibly could do better, using some of the discount airfare websites. If I come across a good fare, I'll post again.

I'm going on 11 June (ship leaves the 12th) to Moscow, returning from St. Petersburg on 25 June. I'm leaving from Baltimore, but I'm going with my sister, who will be coming from Denver. She may decide to book a separate ticket to fly here the day before.
The cruise line is Intrav, the ship's name is Glushkov. We didn't do a lot of research (which is very unlike me!), because we're doing this with some friends who had already booked and then talked us into joining them.
There was a review of the Intrav line (different ship from ours, but same cruise) here on Fodor's sometime back that was pretty positive in tone. I'm really looking forward to it.
The cruise line is asking $1400 for airfare from NY - I thought we'd be able to do better. It sounds like we might be able to.
Open jaws can be a bit more costly, but prob not too bad. Thanks for the tips so far!
Wow - NY to Moscow in mid-June for $900? At this point I think that sounds pretty good. Last year I went to Bangkok and paid only a little more - not sure why Russia is so expensive!

Hi althom1122- part of the reason for the expense may be that you are traveling during the "White Nights", when it will be light almost all night and day. St.Pb in particular is a prime destination for the White Nights, so prices could be higher.
I would definitely keep looking- comething is bound to turn up!
