julie - I live in chicago too and fly out of ohare. Its way way too early to really predict the airfares. Too many factors that influence the rates.
One thing for sure, the airfares go up in the spring and summer. Right now airfares for that time to Rome are about $1100-1200 usd non stop from ORD. Its been that way for the past several years.
The later you go, the hotter it will get and August is not really the best time. Most of Europe, including Italy, take the month of August as vacation. This will increase the amount of crowds at the typical sites and some local shops and restaurants close down.
The earlier in June the better as far as I am concerned unless you dont mind high crowds and the heat.

thanks for the info. We are still just gathering information. This will be the first major trip for my sisters and I. Since our grandparents were born in Italy it has been a dream of ours to return. Mid-June is the time we are planning. When do you think would be the best time to get the best sirfare and with what airlines? We want to plan in advance to get the best prices.

Like others are saying, Mid-June to Italy is never going to be cheap.
Airlines do not release fares until about 330 days prior to departure. And usually you won't see good fares until around January/February for June travel.
You really shouldn't need to care until then.
And no one can tell you what may happen to airfare so far away. Who knows what the fuel cost is. Who knows if any of the large airline that flies to Italy - including Delta and Alitalia - may be around or not.

Lots of opinions on this board about that. Try searching on "airfares" as there are recent threads on this. I start early in the new year to see the prices.
I am not willing to change planes so I expect to pay more. I want a direct flight from ORD right to my destination. We have flown American with good results.
Here is a post about airfares this summer.
