" IMO air conditioning IS an unnecessary luxury in European cities."

Nonsense.

1. Europe is a big place. My upcoming trip includes Kirkenes in the far north of Norway and Barcelona in Spain. I will be very surprised if I need AC in Kirkenes in August. There is no way I would stay in Barcelona in August without it.

2. The climate is changing! when I was growing up in England in the 50s and 60s, anything over 75 was a heat wave, with headlines in the papers. Temperatures just did not hit the highs we are seeing now. And the highs are lasting longer. Yes, a house with thick stone walls can resist the heat, but only for so long. And much modern construction isn't built that way.

3. It makes a big difference whether you are in a city or a village. Even a few trees can help - the trees shading the west side of my house significantly reduce the time my AC runs in the afternoon. Parking my car under a tree makes the difference between bearable and oven when I come back to it.

@sandralist - glad to hear it.

I *am* at work, hehe>>

would that be in an air-conditioned office, perchance, Ingo?

I can speak to the difference between being in a large city and in the country in a heatwave, as I used to commute into London from a village in Kent - spending the day in the city could be unbearable but was rarely so when I got home, even on the hottest day.

Of course I loved and enjoyed my granddad and my dad.
Yes they we're a bit different. My grandpa was a very strict Southern Babtist Reverend.
He wouldn't buy a television because he considered it a luxury.
But my grandma wanted one,so when my uncle returned from WW2 he got my sweet grandma a television.
They were the first family on the block to have one.
My granddad felt AC was a luxury.
FYI the high temps are not caused by industry alone.
Nearly all industry has moved to China due to strict emission controls.
Heat Index is humidy and temperature.
Its not 1980.
The smog has cleared immensely
And they are working hard for clean air.
I know they have been using charcoal filtration for factories that remain.

Just got back from 3 days in Munich and Regensburg. Temps were just about unbearable, hitting 38-39°C. I cannot tell you how grateful we were that we were in a Motel One with decent AC.

Mainhattengirl - how was the Motel One? I have reservations at Motel One in Berlin and Bremen, but haven't stayed at one before. Glad to hear that the AC works! I nearly booked a different hotel in Berlin, until a careful reading of TA disclosed that they turn their AC off at night!

All this AC requires energy that will have a high Carbon element to it. This high Carbon will drive up the climate change which will ensure that more cities have hot periods. Hot periods in cities means more people want AC.

And so the circle turns and the meek inherit a destroyed planet.

If you don't want to be hot don't visit a hot place, how hard can it be?

Denmark was great throughout this period reaching 24C and requiring hotel room windows to be cracked open to let the zephyrs of the countryside cool our beds and the sound of the dawn chorus (at 3am!) to wake us from our slumbers.

Temperature is at 19°C right now, 16 last night - in the middle of the city. The heatwave is over. Please stop pretending that those terrible 38° are the average in summer. These are extraordinary, short periods. It is bad luck to hit such a period. If you mind that risk, travel in spring or autumn.

Time to put the heater back on, then. If not, we'll get tourists aying that it was unbearably cold in Europe during the summer nights.

"f you don't want to be hot don't visit a hot place, how hard can it be?" Some people can only travel during the summer.

Oh my, if you want A/C, book a place that has it. If you don't want it, leave that place to others. Simple!
I will never ever stay in a hotel without A/C anywhere in Europe during the summer. Weather is so unpredictable and can go from 20°C today to 30°C tomorrow (which is what we experienced in Belgium two weeks ago). I'm so glad to have A/C in my house!

thursdaysd - I have stayed at 2 different Motel Ones in Berlin, one in Bellevue and one by the Hauptbahnhof. Liked both of them.

We stayed at Motel One West in Munich. Short tram ride from the train station on tram 19. I find them to be good value, nice decor, decent breakfast for 9.50 (I like the unlimited coffee) and the comfortable king size beds and super shower heads make the stay even more enjoyable. No safes and little storage space, but hey, you can't have everything. Rooms were quiet and with no sounds from traffic or other people.

Pretty much this.

However, if you want to "experience the culture" then by all means take a place without A/C.

I've always found AC to be more expensive that a glass of cooled Rosé wine.

Does that glass help you sleep at night?

Mainhattengirl - thanks! I'm staying in the one at Leipzinger Platz. Looks like a good location, so I think I'll keep the reservation even though the forecast suggests I won't need AC. Better to have it and not need it... Small and no safe sounds like a lot of my hotels/pensions/etc. Quiet is much more important.

It has been steamy hot in NC for weeks - we went over 100 in June! - so I am definitely hoping for cooler weather. It's why I'm headed to Scandinavia for most of August. (Have to be in England for a wedding at the end of August, or I wouldn't be traveling at this time of year.)

A glass of cooled anything is nice, but any relief is purely temporary.

I can deal with hot temperatures during the day but at night, I want to be able to sleep.

If one glass of Rosé is not enough, take 2.
I sleep perfectly well at night. Always have.
I don't know if it makes me special or if we are all used to too much comfort. When in India I see a lot of people sleeping on the street under heat. Not sure their priority is AC.
Does it make me look like a communist ?
