Age Limit

Is there an age limit on renting a car in Ireland? Someone told me that after age 70, you cannot rent a car. Any information would be appreciated.

You need to check with the various car rental companies - they differ on the maximum age for rentals. (My dad - at 85 - just renterd a car here from Hertz - while his was being repaired - some drunk sideswiped him in a parking lot.)

Hi chestnut, I read (Conde Nast maybe) some time ago about age limits. Unfortunatly I do not remember the details (hmmm, is that an aging sign?).

I would contact the rental company you are interested in, or go onto their website to get the exact information. Best wishes.

Some have age limits and some don't -- so you just need to shop around. Hertz is a good fall back option since they seem to be the most liberal.

General rule in Ireland is 70, but some rent up to 75, albeit, at supplimental charge. Check the websites of the major players, under Rules and Requirements.

I don't know how true this is but: an acquaintance told me that one way to get around the 75-age limit is to buy a 'fly-drive package' tour. He said that locks the car rental company into the rental contract.

I, personally have not done this nor do I know of anyone who has.

I think the maximum age in Ireland is age 75, although some companies could make it a bit lower. I am not sure, but I think I've read that is an actual law in Ireland, not just something you can get around by a fly/drive package, and that it's not just a rule of a car agency that is arbitrary.

Generally speaking the max age for driving in Ireland is 75, however Hertz rent to people over that age provided they can supply a doctor's letter saying they are in good health and a letter from their insurance company that they have not had an accident in the past (I think) 3 years.

Hertz are quite expensive though and they impose a levy on over 75's

Does that 70/75 year age limit for car rental apply to the U.K. as well as Ireland? To France?
