After Cruise then Rome
We are ending a Med cruise in Civitavecchia, Italy and want to go to Rome for 2 days. Anybody know how we can get to Rome from there and how far it is. Any hotel recommendations in Rome? I assume our hotel will have the means to get us to the Rome airport. Help would be appreciated. We are going next spring.

Hi me,
You can take a cab from the cruise dock to the train station in C and take the train to Rome. Takes one hour.
See www.trenitalia.com for schedules, prices and tickets.
Hi sk,
Unless your cruise is leaving early in the morning, why not stay in Rome?

There are trains from Civitavecchia to Roma at least every hour (www.bahn.de or www.trenitalia.com). I'd have thought the cruise company would have some sort of transfer arranged, but otherwise take a taxi to the station, then buy a ticket for the train.

The main rail station in Civitavecchia is about a ten-minute walk from the ENTRANCE to the port; your ship will probably be docked some distance from that point.
Undoubtedly there will be taxi cabs dockside on any disembarkation day. A lot of those cabs will want to take you all the way to Rome; opt for the short trip to the rail station and the train ride from there.
The trains from Civ. often make several intermediate stops within Rome itself to inclde San Pietro in Vatican City before ending at Termini.

When my cruise stopped in Civitavecchia this last Oct. We hired driverinrome.com for a private tour. Daniel picked us up at the port and gave us an amazing tour of Rome. He is techinically a driver and not a tour guide. But having grown up in Rome, he knows so much and is a wonderful story teller. I would have him not only drive you from the port to Rome but give you a tour before dropping you off at the hotel. If possible, request Daniel. He was amazing!

We stayed in Rome several days prior to our cruise and LOVED it. We stayed at the Albergo Cesari hotel which was perfectly located, reasonably priced, and very nice, but not 5-star luxury (which was just right for us).
We found it quite easy to take the train from Rome to Civitavecchia -- and since the train station in Civitavecchia is so tiny, I expect it would be even easier to take the train back to Rome. One tip: We used a guide book with common phrases to write out exactly what we wanted: "Two one-way tickets to Civitavecchia" so there would be communication problem at the train station. It was not a problem. By the way, the train ride was delightful; there was a strolling musician and some very pretty scenery along the coast.
In Civitavecchia the clerk at the counter either spoke no English -- or didn't choose to explain where I could get the shuttle to the ship.
If you have heavy luggage you may want a limo, which seemed to cost around $120 - $130 U.S. one way. (Believe it or not, we managed to do the cruise with carry-on! It remains one of my proudest travel accomplishments!!!)
We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel -- and I'm sure any hotel would be glad to order a shuttle or taxi for you. Have a wonderful time. I'm jealous and I want to go back!
