As for a suggested itinerary, suggest you search the Paris destination guide on this website, which will give you very good ideas for a 1 3 or 5 day itinerary.

The three MIJE hostels (www.mije.com) are renovated 17th-century private mansions in the Marais district, a very central location. Both the Lonely Planet and Rick Steves Paris guidebooks call them the best budget accomodations in Paris.
