Flying into Milan in late Sept. and considering a day & night in Lake Como before taking the train to Florence. Any recommendations for reasonably priced hotels (3 star ?)that would just allow the us the chance to visit before beginning the 2 weeks to the south in Tuscany/Umbria. I'm trying not to break our travel budget, but read wonderful things about this area and would like to experience it if possible.

Also search on Lake Como, Bellagio, Varenna. There are mice and some fairly low cost hotels in all of these places.

Consider Albergo Firenze which is in the nicest square in Como and only 5 minutes walk from the train station. Look at www.albergofirenze.it

Bellagio may be a bit too far out especially if you consider taking the 10.13 Cisalpina train from Como which does Zurich-Florence with stops at Como, Mialano & Bologna i.e. you ndon't have to change train at Milan which is very useful if you have any luggage.
