My hair gel/mousse is a "pump" that is under pressure when it comes out. I think I had trouble with this type of can after an air flight years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions that would prevent this from happening or will I just have to leave this type of product at home? I know I can pack it in a sealed plastic bag but I think I remember it took over a week for the thing to stop "spitting" at me every time I wanted to use it. Thanks for your help.

I do not think I will be able to find this where I am going. I live in the US and have no ides if this will be available in London or on the cruise ship, for that matter. It probably would take several days to find it if it is available. My hair is thin and this product is very good at helping me keep my "do". I know this is a minor matter but very important to me!

I have a bath product that I bought in Paris, that is also in mousse form and it traveled well, no problems.
If you shake it really well, that might help with the spitting afterwards.

I am at the library using their computer but I think the product is called "Big Sexy Hair" or somesuch. It is a large red bottle with a quarter size disc thingie on top-? Wish I could remember exactly. My problem is I will be arriving London late at night and only will be there for 2 days before the cruise. I have a limited amount of time to sightsee and don't want to take up a lot of that time trying to find a store where I can purchase this. I will be staying at Thistle's Royal Horseguards Hotel, if that helps.

Can't you carry it in your purse or carryon? I'm assuming you were talking about pressure problems from having it packed in your luggage before. There should be no problem if it is in the pressurized cabin all the time.

I am running out of time that I may use the computer. They have a half hour limit since it is still in season In FL and is a very busy place. Spray all or part of the contents of the bottle into a jar or bottle with a secure lid or cap. Then use it during the trip by dipping in and applying with your fingers.

Alternative suggestion: Maybe just leave it home, and either use something else for the duration of your trip, or try going without.

If this is a "pump" rather than an aerosol, it should not be under pressure until you pump it, so the only precaution you would need would be the same leakproof bag one should use for any liquid.

Whether you carry it on or put it in checked luggage should have no effect. Both the passenger and luggage compartments are pressurized, albeit not to sea level, which is why there is a risk of leakage in either. Be aware, however, that there have been some instances where aerosols have been confiscated before boarding; I don't think the regulations require that, but with a plane to catch, you are usually not in a position to dispute their decision.

I'm not sure if taking a half filled container would help, as it is not really clear what this substance is.

In any event, once you can look at the container, you should be able to identify the maker and you could address your concerns to them. Many makers now put their web-sit addresses on their packaging.

clevelandbrown is correct - both the passenger and baggage compartments on airliners are pressurized - approximately to the equivalent of between 6,000 and 7,500 ft of altitude depending on the particular model of aircraft and other operational considerations. So, if you wouldn't be concerned about what's in your luggage if you were driving, say, into the Rockies just beyond Denver then you shouldn't be concerned about flying with it (that's YOU, of course - not the airlines or the regulators, who may have other considerations and other rules).

I have flown many times with cans of hair spray with no problems at all. I usually carry mine on, but I think either way you'll be totally fine.
