Bree

I hope you are still following the thread. I am a Trollope lover, and I think Trollope is great for trips... it is hard to finish any of his longer novels, even on a long trip.

Have you seen the video production of The Way We Live Now? It stars my favorite English actress, the sublime Shirley Henderson. I try to see everything she is in, and she is always fabulous.

An alternative is to buy an iPOD Nano(which weighs NOTHING) and download a rake of audible books from Audible.com (which also weigh NOTHING).

Other suggestions:

- The Forsyth Saga
- The Egyptian

tuscanlifeedit,

I saw The Way We Live Now when it was shown on PBS here. The cast is indeed a feast for anyone who loves English character actors (including one of my favorites, David Bradley).

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Great behind the scenes fictional look at how cathedrals were built.
or
The Floating Book, by Michelle Lovric an interesting (if somewhat flawed) and atmospheric novel describing the upheaval that occurred when the first printing presses were brought to 15th century Venice.

Thank you again for all of the suggestions. I must confess that oddly enough, it had never occurred to me to bring several books and then leave them behind. I also liked the suggestion of finding books while away.

I will also suggest Mushashi for my husband who is interested in all things Japanese, especially when Samurai are involved. He is a slower reader than I am, for interests sake, his choice for our Greece trip was the complete set of the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. Some of my fond memories of the trip are of sitting on ferries or balconies reading my own Anna Karenina and listening him giggle out loud while reading that book! He sure enjoyed it.

I'm glad this discussion has turned into one of interest. Thank you to the person who provided a link to another discussion of similar subject matter.

Please do keep suggestions coming, I'm keeping a list for ongoing purposes, not just for this trip anymore!

I can get through a novel a day too when on holiday, so I sympathise. Half the weight of my luggage ends up being books! And I almost invariably buy more books when I'm away. I love books so much I can't bear to give them away or leave them behind so I end up lugging them everywhere!

I agree with BTilke about the Pillars of the Earth - it's a cracking holiday read and nice and long.

The Lord of the Rings is another holiday fallback option for me - I read it every few years as I think it's a marvellous story and it takes forever to read!
