Acqua Alta in Venice this month?
Hi
I was just checking tidal forecasts here
http://www.myforecast.com/bin/tide_e...cationID=T2488
It's my understanding (and perhaps that's faulty) that 80 cm and above may lead to acqua alta conditions (I think wind and rain are also factors.)
Based on the above website, does it look like Oct 16-18 might turn out to be a period of acqua alta?
thanks for helping me figure this out.

The 80 cm you mention will only affect certain areas of Venice and only for a few hours. You can really begin to worry if it is above 110 cm.
Here's the Comune's site:

Here's an interesting diagram that shows the areas of Venice that are affected. Keep in mind that Piazza San Marco is the lowest place in Venice and always floods first, even when nothing else does.

I'd been to the comune.venezia website, but the forecast doesn't go beyond the next few days.
Glad to know that the 'worry' level is 110 cm. I've been to Venice before but never encountered the flooding.
I know some hotels give out boots, just thinking ahead.
I'll keep checking. Thanks for the replies.

No helpful information, other than sharing our experience. We were in Venice just over two weeks ago, well before the aqua alta season. But the platforms were already out in San Marco (which we've seen on previous trips). One morning there was a high tide, and parts of San Marco piazza were flooded. Only some parts, but if you funnel all the crowds in San Marco onto narrow platforms, it quickly gets as backed up as NYC at rush hour. It was horrid to get through to where we needed to go.

If you haven't found this already, the times of high tide each day of your visit are:
Oct. 16: 9:10 am, 9:35 pm
Oct. 17: 9:40 am, 10:15 pm
Oct. 18: 10:05 am, 10:50 pm [full moon]
Here's a detailed map showing the elevations of different parts of Venice and the tide level that causes flooding at these elevations. (Page opens slowly.) You can zoom in on different areas. Click on the hand icon to allow you to re-center the map.
