We were in both of these places a few years ago, and were quite happy with our accomodations. In Salzburg we stayed at the Golden Kroner, which is a small hotel in a great location on a pedestrian street just across the river from old city. Actually, the area the Kroner is in is just as old looking, but less touristy. The hotel itself is clean, with large comfortable rooms.
In Hallstat, we stayed at a b&b called the Sarstein (I think - it's in the Rick Steves book). Location wise, this place was absolutely perfect, a 10 minute walk to the center of the city, and you can take eye popping pictures of the mountains, the lake and the village right from your private balcony. There was also a small place to swim right on the lawn. The only drawback - the couple that ran it were VERY old and a bit senile, so she had us booked on the wrong night. When we arrived, it was quite an ordeal to get in touch with the owner to let us in ( a long and funny story). She also has poor eyesight, so there were cobwebs in the windows, funky lamps in the rooms, etc. However, for $60 a night it was quite an amazing location.

I found great bargains on hrs.de (hotel reservation service, germany). Also try utell.com. There's a 74 euro for double in May at the Hotel Auersperg I just booked.
Have fun.

A couple of years ago, we stayed at the Basthof Simony, a B & B right on the lake (and inexpensive). It was a delight! Tel. 06134 8231.

We were in Salzburg in April and stayed at the Gastehaus Steinerhof. I found it on the Salzburg site, and was surprised I had never seen it mentioned here. We absolutely loved it. Located 15 minutes by bus from old town area, but the bus stop is very close to the driveway. This is south on Moosstrasse, in a semi-rural area. They have a barn and raise deer. The rooms are huge, decoratedin Bavarian style, and our balcony had a stunning view of Unterberger. Included breakfasts were huge. The Hausler family who runs it will pick you up at the railroad station when you arrive, or if you are driving there is plenty of free parking space. Price was 55 euros for two.

Hi Eurov,

Will you have a car? We did so that will make a difference as to where you stay. We stayed outside of the city center of Salzburg up in the hills about a 10 minute drive awayin a private zimmer, Haus Moser. We were driving around the hills and saw the sign and drove up and asked if they had a room available. There are many homes that will rent you a room for 10-15 euro per night per person.

We weren't planning on staying in Hallstatt but once we took a walk through town we decided to stay for a night. As we walked through town we inquired about room availibility with one place and she was full but pointed up the road to another place right on the lake with a big balcony. I think it was 15 euro a night per person and it was perfect for us! No private bath but there were two shower rooms separate from the toilet so we didn't have any problem with it. I think it was Pension Sarstein. We had some fun hikes out of Hallstatt up in the forested hills. It is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever been in! Have fun!
