The Goldener Hirsch right in the middle of the old town is a grand old hotel. I think it may be part of the Sheraton chain. It's right on Getriedegasse and across the street from Mozart's birthplace.

I adore this hotel in Salzburg: SCHLOSS MONCHSTEIN. It is perched on the Monchstein hill and it has a WONDERFUL view over the whole city. It is a 5 stars hotel and it is very characteristic. The way to reach it? take an elevator built INTO the mountain! I have been there and it is like stepping into the past. Good food too. Excellent location, guaranteed. Just have a look at it at

I just returned yesterday from a stay at the Goldener Hirsch. It was recommended by a neighbor who had been there twice.
It was beautiful. Relatively small hotel, very quaint rooms filled with mismatched antiques and comforting colors. There was a large double bed which could be separated from the rest of the room by a curtin. A large chest for clothes storage, a desk and small sitting area with a table and TV. Very large bathroom, great shower.
The staff was very personable. They always remembered my name and room number when I returned at night and went over and above in helping me with a day trip to meet friends in Bad Tolz, arranging last minute tours, taking personalized phone messages, etc.
All of the staff members that I dealt with spoke English very well.
Location is perfect. It is right on the main shopping street and very close to all of the Salzburg sights (I walked to Mozarts birthplace & residence, the river, the fortress, cathedral, St. Peter's, etc all within 2-10 minutes.
The ride from the train station was 6.50 euros. The cab driver told me that is was the best hotel in town.
The food was great too!!

Hi Brendaf,
I really enjoyed my stay at the five-star Hotel Sacher-Salzburg in Jan 2002. The hotel is right on the river, so you get views of the river & the old town & the lighted fortress.
I got a great deal there from the Leading Hotels of the World website -- I got a suite facing the river for about 150E/night. It was called the Birthday Special, and I haven't seen it on the website since then!
The views, the rooms, the service -- incredible. But I think I was the only person there without a full-length fur coat (!!).
