Accommodations in Rome/need advice!
We are looking for nice acomodations in Rome. Our
travel agent suggested Visconti Palace. Does anyone
have info on that place or any of the following:
Nord Nuova Roma
Albergo campo de' Fiori
Teatro di Pompeo
Hotel Internazionale
Hotel della Muse
Hotel Bel Soggiorno
Hotel Romae
Hotel Venezia
Also, what is a good location; near train station, colosseum, ancient Rome etc.
Thank you for your help!

I do not know the hotels, but if money is not an object, I would avoid the hotels by the train station. The area is new by Roman terms. The ones near the Campo di Fiori are in a very nice neighborhood. I love the market there in the mornings and would make up picnic lunches by visiting the vendors, stopping by the bakeries, and wine shops. For shopping, there are some nice stores near there, but the more upscale are over by the Via Condotti/Spanish Steps area. The buildings near the Forums that were in and around cow pastures or malarial swamps one hundred fifty years ago. Now you extensive excavations, parks and roads, but few hotels. I would go for the medievel/renaissance/baroque feel in the Campo di Fiori/P. Navonna/Fontana di Trevi triangle.

I would strongly recommend staying in an area of Rome called Travestere. It has great restauraunts and is very fashionable with the younger set. From there it is a very short walk across the river to P.Navonna and the rest of Centro Storico. Unfortunately, I do not know any specific hotels.

We're taking our first trip to Rome next month - Florence and Siena also - and friends who have visited recommend the Spanish Steps area on first visit because it's well-located, relatively safe, etc.
After a lot of research and consideration of many of the hotels you mentioned, we booked at the Scalinata di Spagna, a 15-room pensione at top of Spanish Steps. The Internationale is on Via Sistina where friends stayed and they said Via Sistina was extremely noisy. I do recall that another contributor to this forum has recommended the Visconti Palace. Trastevere looks very inviting but we decided to save this area for our next visit and instead try to be more centrally located on the first trip to Rome.

We stayed at the Crown Plaza Minerva right across from the Pantheon & short walk to Piazza Navona, the Trevi fountain, Campo Fiori. It was a wonderful location & a very comfortable hotel. We walked everywhere without straining ourselves. The hotel is a converted palace & was appointed in very good taste. I believe it was about $250 per night.

Anyone staying at the Hotel Internazionale on Via Sistina in Rome interested in improving the space can ask for a room with a terrace. There are several available; the terraces are small but nice. Even though our room fronted onto the street, we weren't bothered by street sounds, owing to AC. Carol L
