Does anyone know what the "caravan route" and "avoid toll roads and congestion" do for mapping out a route?

What on earth is the Caravan route? can you put this in context?

Caravan route -- Are you taking a camping trailer? If not, don't worry about it. Some routes are not designed for trailers.

Avoid toll roads and congestion -- Self explanatory. I don't recall a toll road in Ireland -- at least I hadn't driven on one.

I wouldn't worry about either. Just plug in your cities and go for it. Then look at a good map and see which way they are routing you.

Caravan in British English is what you would call camping trailer. Roads unsuitable for towing a caravan include steep and narrow secondary roads, which abound in rural Ireland There are a few toll roads in Ireland - the Western crossing over the Liffey on M50 and the Eastern Link Road near Dublin Docks, and the newly opened section of M1 near Drogheda. But you are only talking about a toll of 1.50 to 2 euro each. Avoiding congestion is self-explanatory.

I have a question on directions on aaroadwatch.ie. I typed in Dublin to Kilkenny. It shows that it takes 7 hrs 56 mins! I can't see where it should take that long! A lady at our local AAA office went to a web-site (not sure which one) and she told me it took 1 hr 51 mins and that it is 84 miles. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone know of another web-site to use for route planning?

You must be doing something wrong. I typed in the cities and came up with 1 hour 47 minutes.

I tried it again and it finally worked! On two separate occations I came up with the same 7 plus hour trip. I don't know what I did. So now I've printed out quite a few pages on where we're going.

Just as an aside here is the address for the route planner and map site maintained by the Irish Tourist Board. I find it easy to use and there are some interesting links off of it.

I have been checking out quite a few distances in Ireland with the AAroadwatch.ie and have been caught a couple of times with the same town name in a different county.

Was thinking maybe this happened to you???
There is a Kilkenny west above Athlone, maybe that was your computer's first choice when it came up in the next screen.

When you click on the town and correct the option to the place/area you do want all is well...UNLESS you use your back page arrow to add/change/delete a town. If you do this and then hit next, you must verify again that all of "your" towns are again in the correct area you want.
