Hello and thank you for the help. We (wife, myself, daughter 17 and possibly 20 yo daughter as well) are from southern California and were looking into a trip to Kauai next summer. The prices were so high we figured we might try a one week one stop trip to Europe instead. Two summers ago we visited London, Amsterdam, and Paris. Looking for somewhere new, possibly more affordable, and enjoyable. Stockholm came up as an affordable option.

Right now booking a flight and hotel through AAA seems like it's in our budget. We have never been to Sweden or anywhere in Scandinavia, and have done very little research to be honest. We enjoy the outdoors, museums, and new experiences. Would a trip to Stockholm seem like a good fit? What is the easiest way to get around (we will not rent a car)? From what I've seen Gamla Stan seems like the place to stay. If that's not an option, do you have any other suggestions?

Stockholm is lovely! And it's easy to get around -- for the parts that aren't within walking distance, there is good public transportation.

I'm not sure hotels booked through AAA would be most economical (though I can't deny that, either); I'd encourage you to check booking.com. Gamla Stan would be a great place to stay.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have looked into booking on our own, and flights seen very reasonable. I've also spent a little more time looking at places on Airbnb. Is that a reliable, good option in Stockholm? I figure if we have a kitchen we might be able to save some money on food and possibly extend our stay a day or two.

AirB&B should be fine but you need to read reviews--see if you find the same property on other sites where people leave reviews.....just to make sure you are seeing all the comments. And look for one of the most popular hosts--I forget what they call them on the site.

I must admit that I have no idea how economical Stockholm is these days. Many guidebooks have sections that list the average price of things -- perhaps the OP or others in his family can check a library?

We were in Stockholm about a year and a half ago and would not describe it as inexpensive. Less expensive than Paris or London. Have not been to Amsterdam for 10 or more years. Might want to look at Berlin or Lisbon. What month?

Thanks for the continued help. We will be traveling in late June. I'm not suggesting Stockholm is inexpensive, but when I first did a search for locations in Europe it was one of the more affordable options in the AAA travel search. At that time I was just looking at flights and accommodations. Maybe daily expenses are more. We were in London in 2023 and it was expensive, but having a place with a kitchen made it more affordable. Maybe looking to do the same with Stockholm. Thanks again.

If you’re thinking of late June, keep Midsummer in mind. The white nights can be delightful, but I would imagine it would be more crowded and more costly then.
