Thanks for your rich and sensitive report. I really enjoyed it! I will be going to ROme, for the first time, in September and I will certainly remember you as I sit in a cafe in Piazza Navona and drink Limoncello!!!
And SusanP, good luck in your new life. You sound like, with the exception of your knee, you have all it takes to make good things come your way.

oliveoil, glad you enjoyed the report.
edhodge, I didn't see your post in May. I appreciate the kind thoughts. I did start a new job in July and really like it. I haven't been too active on Fodors the last couple of months, because my house that I was selling got hit by the terrible floods in Upstate NY in June. A huge cleanup job and then lots of repair work. Plus, the house I was buying was pretty much ruined by the flood, so I had to find another place to live while doing all the cleanup, and my new job started 5 days after the flood. Things are finally settling down, I'm moving in 2 weeks and the work on this house is done. Things can only get better, don't you think?
And I hope to go back to Rome for a very short trip over Thanksgiving, or maybe over Christmas. I WILL get there!

Susan,
I don't know you, but I am inspired by your trip report and posts. I am nearly in the same place and I am planning a trip to Italy in February (I have to wait until then). I am looking forward to it as my 'rethink my life" trip. I hope I am a successful as you!
Best to you!

I laughed out loud over the ring! A couple of months ago, after a lot of soul searching and taking some life shifting decisions, I bought a 'committment-to-myself' ring.
I still wear DH's ring (sometimes) but I treasure MY ring just as much.

lout14, it was usually a duo, Yanow Kerner and Mariano Janevski. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure which one I heard (he was alone that evening), but I'm pretty sure it was Janevski.

Hi, I'm a late-comer to this thread, but I just wanted to thank you, Susan, for the great restaurant reviews. I'll be in Italy for the first time in June and all the information you've written, both for this trip and your previous one, have been very helpful. I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with your ability to travel alone. My husband died 3 yrs ago and I'm going to Italy w/a friend b/c I couldn't imagine being all alone for 2 weeks and, especially, eating dinner alone in restaurants. I guess I should start re-considering. Thanks again.

susan217, I'm glad the report was helpful. I have found that I love traveling alone and have never felt uncomfortable eating dinner alone. Nobody finds it strange. Definitely consider it, especially if you want to go on a trip and can't find anyone to go with you! I was just in Rome again over Christmas, so if you want even more information, here's my report on that trip:
