How do you wear those great scarves you talk about so much? I'm pretty short (5'1&quot, and find most scarves are just too much for me. Maybe I just don't know how to tie them right. When I travel, I wear a lot of black and would love to brighten things up. Any tips?

Is there a Nordstrom's near you? Go when it's not too busy and the staff at the scarf counter will be more than happy to demonstrate some tying tips. They won't bug you to buy anything.

Thanks so much for your answers. Yes, BTilke, there is a Nordstrom's near me, and I will go there. Maybe they can also show me what kind of scarves I should wear.

A few months ago I passed through K-Mart on my way to the train station in New York to see if I could pick up some socks for my husband and I noticed they were selling a 3-foot long scarf that was really just a six-inch wide strip of sequins. They had them in various colors, but I picked up in black (for 7 bucks).

I've been to Europe since than and I brought the sequins along. In the evening, I'd drape them over a fairly plain black blouse and, it's astonishing, but suddenly I'm in evening wear.

In the summertime, I like use satin, chiffon and other high-end, thin, long scarves to add color and style to a black blouse worn over tapered black pants. They add no weight to my packing.

Be VERY careful in Nordstoms -- once they show you all the easy/attractive ways to wear scarves/shawls you'll be tempted to really stock up. (I am even shorter that you are and wear scarves and pashminas on every trip - the colors really help brighten up/vary a travel wardrobe)

I don't wear scarves much at home but take them when I travel. I found when I was in Copenhagen and Stockholm right after Christmas last year, that scarves are MUCH more than a fashion accessory. The HIGH for the day in Stockholm was a blistering 19 degrees!!! They have wonderful scarves because everyone wears them all the time and I kept seeing ones I really liked and kept buying them...LOL So now I need another trip so I can wear them all again. Hoping for Paris in November.

Wait and do your scarf shopping on your trip. They make great souveniers.

I have not had a scarf end up in a soup plate but I have been nearly chocked to death by one that caught in an automatic revolving door... I was moving forward, the scarf caught, the door shut down, and I suddenly had a scarf-noose around my neck!

Fiana..LOL I haven't dropped them in my soup but I had a long one on and I thought I was wiping my mouth off with my napkin!!!!! Oops!!! LOL

Once I saw a skirt caught into a moving escalator. That young girl solved the problem fast by stepping out of her long skirt. In front of everybody

Good for the fast-thinking girl. Better to be half-naked than end up caught in the escalator and injured.

In my case I had my scarf wrapped around my neck but thank goodness, I didn't have it knotted. So it pulled very tight, then unwrapped itself. I never ever knot scarves anymore.

I have to agree with Clefloors, I never wear scarves here in the states, but I see so many with attractive scarves when I travel. I'm afraid I couldn't pull off wearing the really long ones, but I'm going to Nordstrom's next weekend to see what they can show me! Thanks everyone.

O.k. here's an important - I mean it - safety tip regarding the wearing of scarves. You must always wear a scarf tied with a square knot. Don't just tie it once - that's a noose. The square knot, preferaby a good distance from your neck, will prevent choking if the ends of the fabric are caught in anything because the knot will just pull against itself instead of moving closer to you.

Oh cripes, all this time I thought the big worry in Italy is being in a car with various Italian friends..they do drive rather fast you know..and dying in an automobile accident.

But now I see I must worry about choking to death due to the scarves I wear when in Italy. Thanks so much for the warning dear Fodorites!
