Hi joanYUL,
Do try to visit sometime. The province is very laid back, low key, "Cdizfornia" they now call it, but very lovely and undervalued with pristine white sand beaches. Just not in the sweltering summer!
August has arrived at our house in June! This weekend Sevillas temps will reach 104 F!

Yes, after Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, would be great or even into the first week of May. Not maybe for swimming in early April, although people do, but for liveliness.
The Parador de Cdiz opened its outdoor pool this year on May 1. I believe that Hotel Antonio in Zahara had its pool open at the end of March, when we were last there.
Dont know if its heated or not. Casa la Siesta's pool outside of Vejer is heated.
The Barcel Playa in Conil de la Frontera has 3 pools are they are definitely open in March. As are most likely the Hotel Fuerte Conil and the Daia Beach also in pretty Conil de la Frontera. I took the bus from Cdiz to Conil.

Thank you. Pool info is good to have, although I was wondering about swimming at the beach ( Im Canadian and prefer cooler water to swim in!)? Im likely looking at Spring /27 for this trip due to some other travel plans, but Ill have fun gathering info in the meantime. 😊

Yes, the beautiful pool at Hotel Antonio was open this year in mid March. It's not heated and no one was swimming the few times I was around, but it you are used to cold water, it would be good--it's a very lovely pool a few steps from that beautiful beach. I did not see anyone swimming there, or in El Palmar de Vejer, in March. I did see surfers at the latter, though.
I think Hotel Antonio would be a great place to stay, but it's a small walk to the center of Zahara de los Atunes, which seemed lively on weekends in mid-late March, quiet during the week. There are quite a few hotels in Zahara but I'm not familiar with any of them. There are also rentals in town; a poster here, from Boston, Mike ...., rented for several years and the place he chose looked fantastic in the photos I saw. But he had a rental car.
The salt-water pool at Casa la Siesta, as Maribel notes, is heated; the hotel is open from February through end of October. You should have a car to stay there, although you can have taxis take you up to the town of Vejer for, I think, 15 euro each way which I thought was very fair, and the taxi drivers are lovely; there are only a few in town and they all know each other and are fun to chat with.
The main pool at the Parador in Cadiz (I think they have more than one) is beautiful!!

Surfers are a constant on the beaches of the Costa de la Luz, thus dubbed as Cdizfornia. And kite surfers galore on the beaches outside of Tarifa, such as la Playa de Punta Paloma. Tarifa is the windsurfing capital of Europe, and the windiest beaches.
And the gorgeous beach of Bolonia, complete with impressive high sand dunes and even a highly interesting Roman settlement at the water's edge, with museum of Baelo Claudia, where one can learn all about garum, where during a poniente wind I was almost swept away in March!
In Zahara de los Atunes Im familiar with the 2-star and the 4-star Hotel Antonio (both combined), which has housed Jos Andrs's family before they bought a property in Atlanterra and the beautiful pool at practically the water's edge was empty when we dined there. In addition there's the new-ish Zahara Beach & Spa, and mike1728 rents in the fall a great property in Zahara, which he probably wants to keep under wraps, because it's such a great find!! If I were he, I'd keep the secret! Zahara de los Atunes is lovely. After Easter, it draws a heavy, in-the-know Spanish crowd.
But to explore fully the Costa de la Luz, from Tarifa to Bolonia to Vejer to Zahara de los Atunes, to Barbate (for a meal at El Campero) to Conil de la Frontera (La Fontanilla) to Chiclana de la Frontera, to Novo Sancti Petri, with several resort-like hotels and Michelin recommended restaurants, one really would benefit from a rental car (and it would be actually needed).
Yes, the Parador de Cdiz has both a covered pool and an outdoor pool.

MFNYC,
I loved your trip report, and I thank you so much for having the time to compose it and share it with us, plus you were in Jerez for one of Spain's most talked about society weddings! (We "talked" about this!)
And your photos are beautiful. You captured the essence of this, one of my favorite, laid back Andalusian cities.

Hi Danon!
My vote is same as Maribel & Scrunchita, JEREZ & CDIZ . 😃
https://vidaflamenca.org/flamenco-cu...gion-of-cadiz/
Kidlets, I feel like a very bad friend. I am way overdue to check in & report on our Dec 2025 Xmas trip.
It's been life changing because family appeared out of nowhere & out went the carefully planned itinerary.
Scrunchy I have NOT forgotten you.🥰😇
Kja, Maribel is right Kimhe hails from Oslo. He follows flamenco & I miss him too.
I am ok. But the interstate move back to California has
taken up several months. Doctor & dentists too ( Ashamed to admit we returned Feb 7 😌
Lots of life stuff. I recall Scruncita you had similar dental things) Thankfully all ok now. But this old grey mare.....🐴
But Danon, I do think you will enjoy Cadiz & Jerez.
Here is an article on ehich I colaborated in 2025.
We did not make Vejer ( we cancelled that after heeding the very good advice that it is not handicap friendly.)
I just have to jog my memory now 🤪
I promise to return soon....

This September will be 16 years in a row to the Cadiz region. Zahara de los Atunes was always our main base to explore the area although this September we will base out of Sanlucar (we allowed friends to take our coveted week at the wonderful apartment that Maribel and Eks referenced). As all all the above posters noted, it is a very beautiful region especially in the shoulder seasons. We could always swim in the ocean in October so I would think April would be fine for swimming. I would think very few crowds as well. Zahara, Tarifa, Bolonia Beach, Jerez, Vejer, Barbate, Conil de la Frontera, El Palmar, Los Canos de Meca (Trafalgar Lighthouse), El Puerto de Santa Maria, Chipiona, Medina-Sidonia, Sanlucar, and Cadiz. All within short distances from each other, so much to explore while enjoying incredible cuisines and Sherry. My all time favorite apartment in Zahara can be found on VRBO (#988787a) but it is extremely hard to get a booking as most of the guests are all return guests who book as far out a year in advance.

I wish I could snag mike's apartment someday. My hairdresser and his wife, both gourmet food travelers, just came back from 5 nights in Zahara raving about it and the local citizenry. They dine at Antonio, El Campero, Casa Juanito and a new one for them, La Fresquita de Perea, which they liked a lot. Do you know La Fresquita, mike? They loved the chiringuitos and the live music concerts on the beach, but Zahara was packed in June!
