A February trip to Languedoc, is it wise??

We usually take a winter trip to Europe and always enjoy them. Usually we spend time in a large city though, so weather isn't much of a problem.

I'm considering a trip to the Languedoc this year, but I'm just not sure how much the weather is going to make this difficult. Here's my planned itinerary, what do you advise?

We already have a European trip planned, leaving in late April, so I don't want to move this trip to spring.

Fly to Barcelona, February 15, return from Barelona, February 26.

We'd arrive in the morning in Barcelona and take the train to Girona. Visit Girona and the Dali museum in Figueres.

Drive from here to a gite in Couiza or Esperaza, France. Very low prices for a week!!

We'd visit Peyripertuse chateau, Mirepoix, Vals, the Fecos in Limoux, Carcassonne, Castelnaudary, Revel, Mazamet, Rennes-le-Chateau, Niaux Caves, Foix, Montsegur, Albi, Cordes Sur Sel, Castelnau de Montiral, Gaillac, Hompes, Olonzac, Minerve, Narbonne, St.Guilhem le Desert, Pezenas, Montpellier, Sete, then Collioure and the Ocean road South, and Cadaques, on our way back to Barcelona. One night in Barcelona, (we've been before), and a flight back home.

There are lots of great places to see, I'm just not sure if it'll be so cold, or perhaps is snow possible??? Will anything be open?

Thanks for any help you can give!

It will be cold, especially when the sun goes down. You should make sure your gite has adequate heating (not just a portable gas fire that you need to take from room to room) and warm bedding. If you are lucky, the skies will be blue, but you won't be able to count on it so you need to have warm clothing with you.

Thank Ainhoa,

We've been to Belgium in January before and boy, that was cold, but bright blue skies! We can handle cold, but is snow possible?? That would be a problem since we'll have a car and plan to drive alot!

Thanks for the hint on the heater, I didn't realize it might be "portable" only. I'll ask.

Hi

Of course anything is possible. Well almost !

February is a relatively dry month here.

The Languedoc coastal strip very rarely has snow. It virtually always melts by lunchtime. We haven't had any for several years, and I am 30km inland.

Coastal temps will be min 5C, max 20+C with a likely afternoon max of around 15C - 20C. Further inland, nights can be cooler, but the clear skies normally allow the morning sun to quickly increase temperatures.

I drove Montpellier, Collioure, Cadaques, Figueres, and return by A9 autoroute end January last year. We had lunch outdoors. No rain, snow or clouds. Even better, little traffic !

So, no guarantees, but I would go ahead.

Thanks so much Peter. You've been a great help. I enjoyed your pictures, thanks for including them.

We're going to be in the Basque region in early/mid May, but I'm really hoping to book a trip to the Languedoc for February.

Now, I'm just waiting for airfares to drop. They're still very high from Cincinnati right now.
