A day trip in France
Warm greetings to my fellow travellers
I plan to be staying in Paris for 5 nights in August and would like to spend one day travelling to the countryside, and have several options in mind. Perhaps a visit to a splendid castle or even travelling to Lyon and back.
My wife is not interested in the wineries etc so I will refrain on that score.
Any suggestions from you intrepid folk?
Regards
Ron

Get up early, TGV to Nimes (3hrs), visit Arena, Maison Carré, medieval centre, etc. Have a decent lunch & return.
Even better stay one night and visit Montpellier, Arles or Aigues Mortes(all 30 minutes by train) too.
Whats on in the area : http://the-languedoc-page.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=11

For a short trip try Provins, a beautiful Medieval town close to Paris. If you want to spend more time on the train, Lyon is an excellent location. There is the old town, silk area, lots of museums, a beautiful cathedral and lots of WWII Resistance sites. Also the food is excellent.
There is a good book for day trips, One Hour From Paris, you might look into it

If we were going to train off somewhere for a side-trip...we love La Rochelle on the coast with it's harbor, towers and light housen not to mention fantastic shopping (3 hrs TGV) and Annecy with its beautiful lake and wonderful food, but given that it's August, I think these two will be wall to wall vacationers.
I second Provins and offer a different option as well, Moret sur Loing - gated town with its watermills, historic church, beatiful lazy river (of the painter Siseley ? fame) if you are looking for a more relaxed environment with excellent restaurants.
