9 Days in Spain - Madrid and San Sebastian or Malaga?

I am heading to Spain in a week with my husband who will be there for work. We have 9 days and the first few days have to be in Madrid. I'm trying to decide the latter half of the trip - should I go to San Sebastian or Malaga?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I am prejudiced and prefer San Sebastian/Donostia. But whichever you choose you will see two distinct aspects of Spain.

Two great cities and VERY different.

A couple of articles about Málaga, one of my absolute favourite cities:

But nothing beats San Sebastián, the food capital of Spain if not all of Europe. Also ome of the finest city beaches on the continent: http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/08/07...tin-spain.html

My vote is for San Sebastian and its proximity to many wonderful picturesque Basque towns both in France and Spain.

I agree with Egbert: In the summer there is no place like San Sebastian.

Moreover, in the summer there is no place like Andalucia - no place as hot, that is!

Malaga is aawesome and has it's own chard but in summer you have to factor in heat with a capital H. SS on the other hand is so awesome that heat, alto present, is/seems to be more tolerable.Avote for SS..

I agree that there is no place quite like San Sebastian-Donostia just about anytime of the year, but the weather the last couple of Julys has been on the mild side, wet and cool during the Jazz festival last year, but the forecast for next month looks pretty good so far.

If you would like to be there in early July, then you should make your reservations today, if you can find a room. The Donostia Cup 2012 (www.donosticup.com) runs from the 1st through the 7th of July. There are 387 teams participating this year, which amounts to around 7500 players and their families. Accommodations will be tight. Hotel rates go up on 30 June.

What time of year? In the summer the south of Spain is as hot as hell and the northern ATlantic coast (San Sebastian) is the only comfortable place to go (that's where the spaniards with money go). In winter you might prefer the warmer weather in the south.

It's early because of the Donostia Cup.
