9 days in Norway - Itinerary help

Hi
My partner and I are heading to Norway in October, not the best time but we will be in Stockholm for a conference. We arrive from Sydney Australia into Oslo on 30 September and need to head to Sweden on 8 October. After the long flight we will need to spend a night in Oslo upon arrival, and will start the trip on 1 October.

Looking for itinerary suggestions that take in the beautiful scenery, fjords etc, not really interested in cities, churches or museums ... more so nature based travel. We are open to travel options such as trains, ferries, buses and self drive.

Any help or suggestions, greatly appreciated.

Molly

Here's the itinerary of a trip I'll be on in early October. Hope it can give you some ideas.

If you've never been before, I would add to the time on the western coast, seeing the fjords.

October 11th
Arrive in Oslo Airport and transfer to Clarion Hotel Folketeateret. A guided tour in the afternoon and dinner in the evening.

October 12th
Morning at leisure in Oslo. Depart Oslo by train early afternoon, heading to Lillehammer and a short guided tour of the city before heading to the mountains and Pellestova Mountain Hotel. Enjoy the mountain views and a dinner in the restaurant.

October 13th
Tour continues north through the Gudbrandsdals valley with old historic farms and nature views. End destination is the small mountain village of Lom, enjoy a walk in the area visiting the old church, river and high mountains.

In the evening a special event to Brimi Fjellstugu for dinner. We will also see the restaurant well known for all Norwegians, Vianvang with the TV chef and owner Arne Brimi, and a visit to the Brimi Sæter, a small mountain farm with focus on great food and authentic accommodations to old Norwegian summer farm life.

After dinner we will head back to our accommodation in Lom.

October 14th
We are leaving the inland and heading towards the fjords, if the National Tourist Route - Gamle Strynefjellsvei (Old Stryn Mountain Road) is not closed for winter we will drive the scenic mountain route to Loen.

A tour with the newly opened Loen Skylift, a cable car taking us from fjord to mountain, 1011 meters straight up. At the top we will enjoy the views of the fjord landscape below us. A local guide will take us for an hours hike and tell us more about the possibilities in the area. After the hike we enjoy lunch at Hoven Restaurant - on top of the Hoven Mountain.

We will take the Skylift back down and continue to our final destination of the day - Fjærland. Dinner and overnight at Fjærland Fjordstue Hotel.

October 15th
Our final day, we start early heading to Bergen. In Bergen you will have time to explore on your own. We will continue to Solstrand Hotel & Bad in the afternoon.

Solstrand Hotel & Bad is located south of Bergen by the Bjørnefjord. Before dinner in the evening we recommend to enjoy the SPA at the hotel.

October 16th
Transfer to airport, and flight home

Oslo-Bergen Railway is one of the most scenic in Europe -take it to Bergen, an ancient Hanseatic port with old-world character I find lacking in much of Scandinavia. Spend a day in Bergen - then a day on the Norway In a Nutshell loop from Bergen - includes a boat ride on Norway's longest fjord - we saw whales! from Gudvagen to Flam then scenic mountain railway up to Myrdhal for trains back to Bergen.

Then take ferry to Stavenger and exlore that lovely area for a few days - train to Oslo.

Oslo good for a day anyway. Then direct train to Stockholm or

Down to Gothenburg, Sweden - another neat old port

And train to Stockholm.

For lots on trains and ferries check www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com - also check out the Scandinavian Railpass which covers trains and ferries and gives discounts on chain hotels - hop on any train anytime - some have mandatory seat reservations - easy to make once there for a small sum.

The Norway in a Nutshell tour can be done between Oslo and Bergen - no need for a separate day trip, saving you a day.
A couple of days in Bergen, perhaps hiking in the hills. A trip on the Hardanger express boat to Baroniet in Rosendal - http://www.baroniet.no/en/
Hurtigruten to Ålesund, which takes a detour through Hjørundfjord, so get off at the 2nd stop at Ålesund. From Ålesund take bus to Åndalsnes and the Rauma rail train to Oslo. That should fill up a week.
From Oslo train or plane to Stockholm - the time is about the same when you add in airport transfers, waiting time etc.

Note that first week in October is half term holiday and trains can be full, so book early. Use the operators net pages not resellers.
https://www.norwaynutshell.com - is public transport and out of season savings can be made by booking individual legs yourself - but you must follow the NiN timetable to ensure connections.

Yes and IME on trains, buses and boat ample room to carry baggage - no need to walk any great distances.
