8 hour layover in Munich

8 hour layover in Munich
We have 8 hours in between flights. We arrive at 1:00pm in the afternoon and depart that evening for Istanbul, Would like to leave the airport and take a train to Marienplatz touring around from a few hours before returning to the Munich airport. Can someone advise how long the train ride would take? What time should we arrive back at the airport (we will already have our seat assignments) and any suggestions to what we might see and do in our short visit.. Thank you for your insight.

The ride to Marienplatz takes some 45 minutes - with either S-Bahn line line that departs from the airport.
Get the Airport-City Day Ticket, which is a day pass so also good for your return trip to the airport.
For your last leg to Istanbul, it depends a bit which terminal you will use.
T2 (Lufthansa or Turkish) is pretty smooth in operations. Security takes 5-10 minutes most, passport control maybe another 5 mins max. So if you have your boarding passes and no luggage to check in, 60-90 minutes prior to departure is fine.
For flights leaving from T1 (all other airlines), I'd calculate 30 minutes to go through security and passport control. There are often some delays. And I'd suggest to be at the airport no less than 90 minutes before departure time.
