6 days Radda/ Lucca

I'm scrapping my rough draft for 6 nights tuscany next week and asking for some sensible / doable ideas for day trips from 2 Hotels first /radda in Chianti and then Lucca 3 nights each place. I will be driving a rental car from Rome where i will spend the first 3 nights and driving back to Rome on the last evening of my stay to fly out in the Morning. Thanks for your help.

Daytrip to Florence from Lucca on the train. You do not want to have a car in Florence. From Radda day trip to Siena with your car.

1) The Lazzi bus to Pisa is located at Porta Sant’Anna where you purchase bus tickets and board bus number 8. In May 2008, the Lazzi bus company had fairly new buses. The ride to Pisa takes about ½ hr., and you get off at Piazza dei Miracoli. Be aware though, if you take a bus to Pisa from Lucca on a Sunday, the service is limited.

2) You can explore the Garfagnana region along the Serchio River as far north as Bagni di Lucca. This area is woodsy with small mountains. The Devil's Bridge is along the main highway, and a great photo op. The towns in this area look like they have seen better days.

3) Another suggestion is to drive west toward the seaside town of Viareggio, and then up the coast to Forte dei Marmi (Andrea Bocelli has a home on the coastal highway).

If you go to Fodor's Lounge you will find a very heated conversation about Lucca and kabob stands.

As I remember the drive, the traffic was very light on Sunday. We were able to sit in the first seat of the bus (to the right of the bus driver). The road he took was picturesque, but as he approached Pisa, the traffic got heavier, but not congested.

The Lazzi bus schedule in the afternoon had a two-hour gap between scheduled buses to bring people back to Lucca. Basically, it's the same as a holiday schedule.

If someone else is reading this post, they may be able to tell you where you can park your car. I didn't pay attention to parking lots.

Our visit to Lucca was for four nights and we loved Lucca. There is a particularly good tourist map of Lucca titled: The Wanderers Map of Lucca available at www.lindquistguides.com.
