Due to FF blackout restrictions, we are limited to just 5 days in Munich this spring. We plan on staying at the Munich Marriott (outside of the city centre) and using only public transporation during our trip.

Some suggestions on what to see and do with our limited time would be appreciated. Recommendations for a brauhaus or two would also be appreciated (so we can toast the memory of my FIL with a cold one and thank him for the trip).

Hi seetheworld. DH and I were in Munich in September. In my opinion, a half day trip to Dachau is a must. It was absolutely moving and unforgettable. You can do the entire thing by public transportation.

Believe it or not, our very best meal in Munich was at a brand new Mexican restaurant called Milagros, just outside the Viktualien Markt. This was no typical Tex Mex. It was an authentically beautiful restaurant with out of this world food. We were there for dinner, but I'm pretty sure it's open for lunch too.

there is a lot to see and do in Munich.
It is rather compact, has excellent public transit, good shopping, delicious cakes, many traffic free streets, a lovely river bank, parkas, churches , several great museums.
Depends on you you are interested in.
There is no shortage of indoor and outdoor beer halls (gardens).
The best beer anywhere.
We had 5 days and only made one half day trip (to Dahau).

We also stayed outside of the city center at the Sheraton near the olympic stadium, so we strolled though the olympic stadium where the 1972 olympics were held. This area is now a public park, public pools, public ice rink, we also saw the housing for the athletes.

There is a Mike's Bike's tour through Munich which was a great bike ride and also gave us a lot of great information about Munich.

If you have the slightest interest in science and technology, and maybe even if you don't, the Deutsches Museum is one of the wonders of the world.

My top Munich highlights:

1. Residenz and its Treasury
(truly magnificent palace - we spent an entire day here)
2. Alte/Neue Pinakothek
(we love museums, and these are top notch!)
3. Schloss Nymphenburg
(buy the guide map of the grounds at the gift shop before walking the grounds - so much to see, and the grounds are absolutely beautiful!)
4. Deutsches Museum / Bavarian National Museum
(can you tell we love museums?)
5. English Garden
6. Viktualienmarkt (hunt down the soup kitchen for a yummy bowl to warm your tummy!)
7. So many churches! So little time! So gorgeous!
8. Marienplatz and environs.

My favorite daytrip from Munich:
Herrenchiemsee (Germany's Versailles Palace - super wow!!)

You might want to consider a one-day train trip to Salzburg. You can get the 29 Euro Bavaria Ticket that is good for Salzburg after 9am. It covers up to 5 people for the day. Nymphenburg Palace is interesting but be sure to check out the Carriage House (Cindarella Coaches). Being there in the spring should be georgeous with the Englisher Garten and the outdoor beer gardens.

1.Is there a fee to enter the Olympic stadium? <-- we looked up online that there is a small fee to enter the stadium, we did not enter but found 'Olympic Park' very interesting.
2.Swisshiker mentioned the english garden, our mike's bikes tour took us through the english garden, to a outdoor beer garden within the english garden. The tour also took us to the university where the white rose movement took place.
