5 Days in Tuscany
During our trip to Italy this year, would like to spend 5-6 days in Tuscany. Have seen Siena, San Gmigniano & Florence -- thinking of Perugia, Assissi, Orvieto, etc. I speak Italian, so we'd like the "non-American" hotels. Any good itineraries?

Helen,

The places you mention are in Umbria, which is excellent in its own right. I loved Assisi. And if you are actually going to forsake Tuscany for points further south, let me suggest the province of Rieti (east of Lazio). You can find more info here that I have previously posted about it.

Can't tell you about hotels there, though - - stayed in self-catering properties. Recommend Villa Vallerosa - - see www.domani-usa.com for more info. Click "Price list" and then "Rome coutryside"). Larry Haase is a nice guy. Ask for him by name, and tell him I said hello.

on our trip last year, my husband and I loved Lucca - feels like Venice without the walls and the seaside town of Forte de Marmi which is the seaside resort for rich Florentines. The market there has wonderful textiles that make great take home gifts. Great, extravagant restaurant called Lorenzos where we had the most wonderful lunch of our trip. Just my 2000 lire

Three towns that my wife and I loved just walking around in were Colle di Val D'Elsa, Volterra, and Pienza. Some other worthwhile towns and sights: Montereggioni (small towered town referred to by Dante), Montalcino (Hotel dei Capitani w/valley view!!), the church at Montepulciano, Sant Antimo, Cenntaio winery, Oliveto Maggiore...... I could go on and on!!
You've got me ready to get plane tickets now!
Have a great time.
