Thanks to your help I have booked a wheelchair accessible room in Hotel Ponte Sisto. I've been to Rome before, but my daughter, who is in a manual wheelchair, hasn't. We will have 4 full days, so I need to make an itinerary which will be comprehensive, since public transportation is not accessible for the most part. We would appreciate any suggestions on how to make the most efficient accessible itinerary for someone in a wheelchair. Thank you once again for all your ideas.

You might first make a list of what you'd like to see and we could better help you to make an itinerary. It's hard to know where to start if we don't know where we're going.

There are several tour services that specialize in golf cart tours for people with limited mobility. They can carry a wheelchair along. You might google "golf-cart tours Rome". Once you've figured out where you can easily get to with cheaper means, you could plan a golf cart tour for the more difficult bits.

The city of Rome used to have a transportation service, by reservation, for disabled tourists, but it seems to have bit the dust in the recent round of budget cuts. At least, the web page I had bookmarked no longer exists. When I googled for transportation for disabled people, I found this private service:

According to the ATAC, Rome's public transportation service, the following bus routes are guaranteed to have wheelchair access: H, 44, 46, 60, 80, 81, 85, 87, 90, 170, 360, 490, 558, 590, 650, 660, 664, 671.

Some regular taxis are also equipped for use by wheelchair users. Your hotel should be able to help you with calling a taxi and making sure it can cope with a passenger in a wheel chair.

If you're planning to visit the Vatican Museum, they have a special route for wheelchair users, which avoids the stairs.

Note that if you carry a certificate of 75% or more disability, your daughter and one companion can enter the Vatican Museums free, without waiting in line. Just go right to the front. The second person would have to pay, of course. I would avoid weekends, Mondays, and Wednesdays, and I'd try to go in the late afternoon, when the crowds should have thinned out a bit.

There are similar free entry provisions at many of the museums and archaeological sites of Rome.

The Colosseum has an elevator for disabled visitors. The ticket also gives access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The Palatine Hill is pretty accessible to wheelchair users, and there are some great views over the Roman Forum from the hill, and also nice views of the Colosseum. The Roman Forum has some paths that are asphalt, but others that are ancient paving blocks, and a bit difficult in a wheelchair.

I would think a stroll around the Villa Borghese park would be a pleasant way to spend a morning or afternoon. They have golf carts for rent there, and I imagine that a wheelchair could be accomodated, but I can't guarantee that. They also have four-person bicycle carts.

A lot of the museums are also accessible, so if you tell us which you want to visit, I'll try to help with that.

You mentioned many of the places we want to see-Colosseum, Forum ,Palatine Hill,Vatican and Sistine Chapel, Spanish Steps, Trevi, Pantheon, Navona, Fiori, Testevere, Vatican, Sistine Chapel, vila Borghese. Are there any touristy things that could be done at night? We'd like to walk as much as possible. Probably, we'd go out in the morning, return to the hotel for a few hours rest in the afternoon, then go out again at night for dinner.
