entrails of a goat ... very nice. I needed that. Don't even try to predict the weather in Ireland. You can have great fun on rainy days and you don't have to be near a big city. Just take some rain gear and you'll be fine.
By the way, umbrellas don't do much unless you have a very good one. Most rain, especially along the coast, is accompanied by strong winds.

I like your basic itinerary, would make the following adjustments...
would opt for 2 nights in westport, good dining /pubs.
past croagh Patrick thru doolough valley (be sure to get our and walk on the bog) to clifden/sky road and back to westport would be a nice day trip (could make it to roundstone and back also, long day...but not worth it in my opinion)
on way to doolin, quick stop in cong (enjoyed path behind the abbey)and thru burren or coastal/black head drive to cliffs, stay in doolin
take kilmer/tarbert ferry to dingle via connors pass (about 4 hours)...enjoy slea head loop drive in dingle
on way to kenmare from dingle would stop at ross castle and/or muckross house and then drive thru killarney national park past ladies'view and moll's gap
would spend a second night in kenmare and drive beara pen./healy pass
(above basically includes all of my favorite towns and scenic drives)
could save a day (for xtra kenmare day) by doing quick stop at cashel and on to dublin or take a day off dublin (since you like small towns)
if you do spend the night in cashel you may want to add a stop at cahir castle on the way and a stop at glendalough the next day on way to dublin
you can click on my name for trip reports from this june and 3 years ago that cover all of these areas...our objective was same as yours- scenic tours during day ...pubs at night...you will love westport, doolin, dingle, and kenmare
newgrange/knowth is very interesting if you have the time
in dublin our our favorites were kilmainham jail and trinity library/book of kells ...also enjoyed literary and music pub crawls and hop on/off bus tour
have a great trip

Hi Lyban,
You just feel free to ignore anyone who says you're spending too much time thinking about this! How would I live vicariously through your trip if you don't spend time asking questions? Isn't that why we all enjoy thinking about other people's trips - so we can imagine them?
I do think Chip's advice is quite good: Westport, Doolin, Dingle and Kenmare. How can you go wrong with those? Do let us know how your planning is going!

I just came back from Westport and loved it. What a beautiful town! We stayed at the Boulevard Guesthouse and I totally recommend it. Wonderful innkeeper and great location.
We visited Knock (45 mins from Westport) and that was interesting.
Our drive from Blennerville (just outside Tralee after we did Dingle Peninsula) to our rental home in Liscannor (town before Doolin) was VERY long and tedious. Every town we hit slowed us down. This was a Saturday, so that might have been the problem.
Too bad you can't fit in Kilkenny. Had a great time there, loved the castle and the Laragh House was a good place to stay. Funny, my kids were underwhelmed by Cashel. Last year we took them to Mt. St. Michel and that was similar but "better" acc. to the kids so they preferred other things we did on this trip, notably Clonmacnois and Kilkenny Castle.
Have a great time.

Hi All,
I am back from a week of business travel and ready to look at this itinery again. I was thinking, that maybe I could keep my itinery as planned except adding some extra leisure time and then after Kenmare dropping car in Cork and flying to Dublin. Please let me know if this is crazz, or a good idea.
