The Marais, which is in the 4th, is in fact a gay neighborhood, as is the jewish neighborhood in Paris, but you'll find gay and straight, jewish and christians there.

However, if you have a problem with gays or jewish people, maybe you should stay elsewhere. I, for myself, find it a lovely district.

Regards,

S

I absoultely don't have a problem with gays or Jewish people. My wife and I found a lovely hotel in the 4e Arrondissementin (the Caron de Beaumarchais) that we reserved for our trip this summer. I just had heard that it was the case. I was just wondering.

I stayed in the 4th a couple of years ago and will again this spring. It's become a pretty hip part of town (think Soho), with lots of trendy boutiques and restaurants. I also found it very convenient, not far from Notre Dame, Ile Ste Louis (totally charming).

Hi Ed! I love this neighborhood! It's my favorite and will be staying there for my 40th next month.

Caron de Beaumarchais is a lovely hotel in a great location. Right next to great cafes & fabulous shops. Andi is right about the Soho comparison.

And 5 mins. walk to St. Chappelle, Notre Dame, Musee Picasso.

You'll also be very close to the lovely park Place des Voges, and a very pretty square, Place du Catherine, which has several quaint teeny bistros off it.

Enjoy your stay!

If you're staying in the Marai, there's a great, romantic restaurant quite near your hotel. It's Au Tibourg, on Rue Tibourg. They're not touristy, but very friendly to Americans.

Ed,

We stayed at the Caron in November. It was good. Great location and we were able to hit a lot of 'local' spots since it is nestled into so many neighborhoods. We like to stock up on bottles of water and some snacks and there was a small grocery store right next door which is open until midnight. Also, on if you are at all interested in the Jewish part of the neighborhood-Sundays there are very cool. Just one or two streets behind the hotel is Rue des Rosiers-the main artery of this neighborhood and on Sundays the streets are filled with a hustle and bustle after the locals have stayed in for their Sabbath. There was really a neat charge in the air and we found to be a truly authentic experience and a great break amid all the touristy things we had been doing. Very interesting restaurants there as well. The other good part is that there are many small, trendy boutiques which are open on Sunday, whereas shops in the rest of the city, for the most part, are closed.
