day trips from Brussels

We will be in Brussels for 4 nights in late March. Is it realistic to plan day trips for each day? (We will be there from a Friday to a Tuesday). We'd like to explore Brugge, Antwerp, and Ghent. How long are the train rides to each from Brussels and what is the cost? Also are these cities "doable" in a one day trip?

Candace,
All of the cities you mentioned are "doable" in a one day trip although Brugge and Antwerp, particularly, warrant at least two days. The longest train ride you'll encounter is to Brugge from Brussels and that's only an hour in duration at most; Ghent about 40 minutes or less, so too Antwerp. Train service is frequent, costs minimal.

Are you planning to stay only in Brussels? I would suggest taking in Cologne (Koln) in Germany. It's about a 2.5 hour train ride. I lived in the city for about 3 months and I fell in love with it.

I just read of the recommendation from SJK to go to Cologne. I will be in Brussels for 7 days and expect to take a number of sidetrips. My Husband really wants to go to Cologne. Can you give me some suggestions on what to do there? Thanks, kathleen

If you are going to be in Brussels for only 4 nights, I suggest that you see Belgium. Brussels is worth 2 days, Brugge is 2 days, Antwerp 1 day. Also, the Ardenne and Luxemberg are interesting. Consider renting a car. Driving is easy, roads are good, saves time waiting for trains. If you can, when you return, post a short report of your trip here. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments. Has anyone used "tourist agencies" for day trips around and about Brussels? Also, has anyone stayed at the Metropole; and if so, any advice as to the rooms?

Hi Candace, I answered your questions in the "renting a car" message--
I've been in the Metropole Hotel's cafe many times. It attracts a lot of high end conference travelers (doctors, EU officials, etc.).

BTilke
