The Château de Cottun is a château B&B, while the Château de Sully is a château-hotel. Accordingly, the Château de Sully is more expensive and offer the services you would expect in a hotel.

Hello Underhill: We will be visiting Normandy in October. We are set with hotels in Port-en-Bessin and Deauville, but would greatly appreciate seeing your itinerary. Please e-mail to [email protected]. Many thanks.

I will point out that someone mentioned taking the train to Rouen and renting a car there. I take it from the way the thread has developed that you are renting your car at CDG. This is good because you would have to go into Paris to take a train to Normandy which is not very practical.

We stayed at Chateau de Cottun in July. Search my screen name - the thread is called "FOUND: a great B&B in Normandy!"
Truly the best place we've stayed in our year of European travels.
Good luck!
And for what it's worth, we wish we had spent more time in Normandy area (so much to see there) and skipped MSM. A huge tourist trap and not worth it at all, but that's just our opinion.

Mont St-Michel is awe-inspiring and beautiful if you can time things to be there first thing in the morning, before the hordes arrive. The abbey and Merveille with a good guide is a great experience, but the rest of it can be a bit much. I suppose most major pilgrimage sights (religious or tourist) have always been like that.

There are already a lot of opinions but what for its worth, our family spent 5 nights in Bayeux in August 2003. We chose Bayeux for the central location and stayed at Lion D'Or. We did tour the cathedral and tapestry which were wonderful in a single day. Also went to the Bayeux WW2 musuem - too much to see unless you allocate at least 3 hours in my opinion. We did a guided tour with col. Michael Chilcott. It was just our family of 4 and incredible. The tour was supposed to be a single day but because we dwadled at the Longues Battery, he extended it an additional half day at no additional charge. We also went to St Mere Eglise and Utah beach on our own and Mont St Michel on our own (nice but in the heat, I'd skip it next time). There are many museums and monuments to see. It you're looking for beach, sunning and nightlife, don't do Bayeux. Its an old town - spared during WW2 thankfully. Nice restaurants as well. Lion D'Or is an old stage coach inn - very charming and quiet with a great restaurant. Let me know if you'd like any more info. You're probably overloaded now!

If you want sun and beach weather in April, I'd go to the Riveria. In summer, Normandy can be cool, breezy. We happened to be there during the heat wave summer of 2003 when temps were unusually high. Neighbors had been there the summer before and wore long pants, long sleeved shirts or light jackets.

My wife and I spent 2 nights in Bayeux at the Hotel D'Argouges. It is right in the center of the town, withing walking distance of the Cathedral, Bayeux Tapistry, and tours to the Beaches. We took train from Paris. Contact <[email protected]> or get photos on search engine. Very nice.

We visited northern France in late June & early July. La Reserve in Giverney is a wonderful B&B, and the hosts are a delightful couple. We also stayed at Chateau de Bouceel, about 30-minute drive east of Mont St. Michel. The Count speaks excellent English and loves to share the history of the estate which has been in his family since the 1200's. Honfleur is beautiful; Rouen is worth a day's visit, but I'm glad we didn't spend the night. Omaha Beach and the American Cemetary is very moving. Don't miss Mont St. Michel, and be prepared to spend a full day exploring the abbey and town. I found both our lodgings at www.karenbrown.com. We've had excellent experiences with all the places recommended through that site, in Italy and in France.
