It's a fairly long drive from Mont St-Michel to Paris. You have to work your way from there over to the motorway at Caen; from there it's reasonably fast, but I'd figure at least half a day for the trip.

Bayeux would work very nicely as a base--we're planning to visit the Mont (again) one morning and then return to our château B&B near Bayeux via Coutance.

seems lke maybe the way to go is first night at giverny and then 3 nights in bayeux. do msm on the 2nd day there, then can go back to paris on last day and not have the 4 hour drive

Four of us used the Bayeux area to base ourselves for 3 nights during a 2000 trip. We stayed 2 km outside of Bayeux at Chateau de Sully in Port-en-Bessin, and absolutely loved it. Standard and superior rooms shouldboth be in your price range. They have a 1* Michelin restaurant as well.

We visited Paris, Normandy, and Loire Valley recently. Here are some recommendations for Normandy area:

We stayed in Honfleur 1 nt at Hostellerie Lechat, a very small charming hotel right in center of town.
Cost was under 100 euros/nt.

Another recommendation in close proxmity to the D-Day beaches is Ferme de la Ranconniere in Crepon, France. They have a restaurant also which is very good.

Lastly, if you really want to experience the D-Day beaches, stay the night in Arromanches-we wish we did 1 nt there.

The trip from Bayeaux to Le Mont Saint Michel is 78.6 miles, 49.11 miles of which are on a motorway, an hour and a half, per Mappy.

We just got back yesterday from a 5 day trip all over Normandy. Whatever you decide, DO NOT stay at Hotel Bellefontaine, horrible experience and the new "annex" was terrible for our family. NOT friendly and breakfast sucked... Went to Mont St-Michel, Giverny, D-Day beaches, tapestry, etc.. If I were to do it over again, I would have stayed downtown Bayeux..

i am leaning towards the cheateau sully for 3 nights to use as a base--including day trip to mont. st. michel. is that a reasonable plan? the question is whether to stay 1 night in giverny on the way out from CDG. should we do that? anyone have suggestions for places to stay in giverny?

I think it would be a good idea to stay somewhere not too far from CDG the night you arrive--going all the way to the Bayeux area is a long drive when jet lag kicks in. Check out the Giverny tourist web site for information on local hotels and B&Bs; new ones continue to be added.

What we're doing next month is spending one night in Les Andelys, two nights near Rouen, one night in Honfleur, and two nights near Bayeux. If you skip Rouen and just head for the coast you can get in your 4 nights, but you'll need to figure several hours for the return trip to Paris.

Hello: Another recommendation for Ch. d Sully. Wonderful place, lovely restaurant where we had a very special dinner in the glassed-in terrace in the rain. We had a room in the (?) carriage house (e.g. not the main house) with a quiet patio looking out at an ancient tree and pastures. I'd recommend it to anyone! Why not stay there the entire time in Normandy? I wish we had had more than 2 days! Enjoy, Jane

Attention: those to whom I sent our Normandy itinerary. On the day we're going to Le Havre we will probably also go to Fécamp and visit the Benedectine Monastery. On the way back we'll drive through the town of Ste-Addresse, which has fine villas overlooking the sea (my husband says to think of the 17-mile Drive near Carmel, CA).

To stay at Giverny you need to look for something in Vernon. I personally would see Giverney and then go on to Rouen or as someone mentioned, Les Andelys which is very close--just up the road.
We toured Normandy for 6 days, spending 3 in Bayeux, and still didn't make Mont St. Michel. You can do it on your time schedule probably but it really will take a whole day.
By the bye, Giverney is closed on Mondays.
