30th Birthday in Paris - the Impossible Restaurant
A dear friend and I both turn 30 this year. In spite of the fact that we have lived in separate cities for years and years, we have remained very close, and her father surprised us recently with the news that he is using mileage to send us to Paris to celebrate in a couple of weeks. We will arrive the morning of her birthday.
I would love to take her someplace absolutely memorable for that evening's dinner - someplace classic and decadent. The trouble is, I'm a PhD student with a 15-month-old (it's a vacation for me in more ways than I can express here), which means I can't afford more than about $250 total. Since she doesn't drink, I can splurge more on food.
Given my budget, Taillevant, Astrance, and Joel Robuchon are out.
I considered La Tour D'Argent, but heard it was overrated, and Jules Verne is closed for renovations.
I'd love feedback about some places I'm considering, or suggestions about others.
Laperouse - too romantic?
Le Pamphlet
Le Bistrot d'a Cote Flaubert
Altitude 95 - great views, I know, but how's the food?
Le Train Bleu - is it a bit kitschy?

In June we dined at Les Ombres and the food was excellent. There is a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower and it really would be a memorable evening. We also dined at Le Pamphlet and while the food and service were also wonderful, I don't know if it has the "wow factor" you are seeking. Google Les Ombres for their website and look at the photos and menus. Have a terrific trip!

Hi L,
>Given my budget, Taillevant, Astrance, and Joel Robuchon are out.
Taillevent has a fixed price lunch for 70E pp.
>Laperouse - too romantic?
No. Our last dinner there was about 280E with wine, and worth every centime.
>Le Train Bleu - is it a bit kitschy?
My Lady Wife and I both don't think so. We prefer the smaller room at the back.
You might find the Paris resto reviews from my trip report helpful:

I think Jules Verne will reopen in December, for anyone who wants to know.
