30th Anniversary trip to The Netherlands
Hi! You all have been so helpful to me in planning trips in the past and I've browsed through the trip reports and not seen anything specific to the trip I'm thinking of. So here I am, asking for help. My hubby and I are planning a 30th anniversary trip and are thinking of travelling to the Netherlands in late April, early May. Maybe 10 days. Most likely flying into Schipol (sp?). A couple of days maybe in Amsterdam, but then we'd really like to see the rest of the country. Definitely Keukenhof Gardens, What are the other must see, do, eat places that aren't in Amsterdam?
Thank you so much!

Method of transport?
If you head for the likes of Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk etc you can stand a huge chance you will end up in a queue with other tourists.
Have you thought about going outside of the safety zone/box?

Thank you! I love tulips so that’s why Keukenhof is on the list. As far as travel within Holland is concerned, not sure -thinking about renting a car. And yes - we’d love to get away from the touristy places and see the country, so any advice would be great!

Appingedam?
But indeed, you might want to visit The North. Groningen is perhaps the most Scandinavian city outside of Scandinavia. Or do a tour of Hanseatic cities: Deventer, Zwolle, Groningen, but also a mini city like Stavoren, in Friesland.
Or follow the Rhine delta rivers upstream and visit Nijmegen, Arnhem, Hoge Veluwe/Kröller-Müller, also Deventer...
The cool thing is that distances are short and you get to a lot of places easily by public transport. If you drive, there are interesting possibilities too, for instance, drive around the IJsselmeer/Zuiderzee in 3 or 4 days and visit towns like Hoorn, Enkhuizen. See the Afsluitdijk, and visit Harlingen, Franeker, a lovely town like Sneek and drive back via the huge Flevopolders. If you time it right, you'll see more tulip fields in Noordoostpolder than you do near Keukenhof.
