30th anniversary trip, Gerona, Begur recommendations

Hello, everyone! I am so happy to be planning a trip again and I look, as usual, to all of your combined experience to make our trip that much more special. We will be in Spain May 9- 19 not including travel days to/ from the states. We have booked an apartment in Gerona the 15th and 16th and will be in Begur the 17th and 18th before heading to Barcelona on the 19th and flying home the 20th. Ok, now that is out of the way, I have a couple of questions that maybe Maribel and any others can chime in on. First, anyone know if those dates in Gerona are during the flower festival? I would love to see that.
In Begur, we are looking at Staying at Cap sa sal, Aigua Clara or Begur classic, but I’m having a hard time getting the lay of the land. This is at the end of our trip so, someplace peaceful with water views, but an easy walk to the central part of town.
I always love to ask about places other traveler’s went or things they did that were surprisingly delightful or interesting. Sometimes the best moments happen in unexpected places.
Anyway, your time and thoughts are appreciated. The people on this forum have added immense value to our previous trips so thank you in advance.

We stayed in Begur at the Parador de Aiguablava. for several days before heading south to Barcelona. The hotel is on it’s own peninsula with beach access on one side. It is a contemporary style Parador unlike the other historic ones we have stayed in throughout
Spain. Nothing wrong with it, just different from other Paradors. The views were beautiful. Easy access to the nearby village.
We ran out of time to stay in Girona. Google revealed the Flower Festival dates for Girona in 2023 are May 6-14. ( note spelling of Girona.)

HapptTrvlr,
I’m curious about the Parador de Aiguablaiva. It looks lovely, but it’s not all that near Begur, is it?. My impression is that it’s close enough by car but it’s not walking distance to town. I also got the impression that you didn’t love it, though I could be wrong.

I’m also thinking about a trip to this area next spring, and want a place that has great views and is accessible to the Camino along the water. A plus would be in or near Begur. In reading about the Costa Brava, it looks like Llafranc has easier access to the Camino, although I’m especially interested in Begur.

HappyTrvlr- Thank you for the suggestion and the correction (sp) . I somehow latched onto the Spanish spelling rather than the Catalan. The correction is duly noted🫢. It appears the Parador has been renovated and is lovely. I’ll take a closer look at that.
progol- you are also right. Per the Parador website, it is 4km from the town of Begur, not an unreasonable distance. Although my understanding is that it’s uphill so also good exercise.

Happytrvlr- While you were there, any happy accidents that you’d like to share? We’re the gently exploring type. We love nice walks, architecture, lovely views, good food not much for water sports or challenging hikes. There are some places that just pull the pin and you immediately exhale if you know what I mean. Coastlines generally have that effect on us ( we live in the desert but were raised not too far from the shore) so I imagine this will as well. Any walks or other discoveries that were a pleasant surprise?
Many thanks for your replies.

Sorry, if I gave off any negative vibes. We have stayed in Paradors all over Spain but they have been in historic buildings. I think it was hard to consider the one in Begur a Parador but it is. Just a contemporary one. And the other hotel guests when we were there were a very rowdy bunch! None of these should be considered a reason not to stay there.
I think you need to drive a short distance into the town of Begur.

My husband and I will be staying in Llafranc at Hotel Llevant in a few weeks. Our traveling style is similar to yours - gentle walks, beautiful scenery and architecture, and good food. "There are some places that just pull the pin and you immediately exhale if you know what I mean. Coastlines generally have that effect on us." That's what I hope to find in Llafranc. Maribel recently updated her Costa Brava guide, which I'll be relying on extensively. She was quite helpful on Tripadvisor when I first started planning our visit. You can find the thread there under the title (I think) Costa Brava. I posted there as Leslie K.

HappyTrvlr, thanks for correcting my impression. The parador looks very lovely, but you’re right - 4km is a bit more than a short walk to town, at least for us!

Vonse, I hope you post your impressions of Llafranc. It’s a place I’ve also been interested in because it’s got easy access to the Camino and close to the beach for nice views. I’ve been looking at Hotel Llevant as well as BlauMar. We’ll be going in May, too, though probably toward the end of the month.

Vonse- Please keep us posted on your trip. I hope it’s everything you want it to be. I will check out both your and Maribel’s posts on TA. I appreciate the head’s up on that. We’ve been to Anadalusia but never this part of Spain, really looking forward to it.

I think we’ll end up booking at Cap sa sal and take a taxi into Begur proper unless someone out there has a fabulous alternative where I get to have my cake and eat it too. It’s so hard to choose based on photos and anonymous reviews as everyone’s idea of “ comfortable” or “ close” can be so different.

I did look at the Parador , but I don’t think it’s what we have in mind for this part of our trip.

I will let you know my impressions. I’m having trouble with my iPad so it may have to wait until I return. So excited!
