Gerona day trip from barcelona

We spent the day today traveling from Barcelona by train to gerona as a day trip and can highly recommend it. Gerona is a lovely picturesque city which is totally walkable. For those that prefer, at the bus station, there is an inexpensive tour trolley that can take you to the old city. The walk into the historical center is about 15 minutes and is quite pleasant through the more modern section of the city.

We were in Barcelona last fall and loved it! We are planning to go back in October, but this time we will fly into Barcelona and go directly to Girona to relax/recover from jet lag for two nights before driving into France. We will spend time in Barcelona at the end of the trip. My question is: do you know how easy it is to get to the train station in Barcelona from the airport? If we take the train to Girona, we can hopefully pick up our rental car on our way out, rather than worry about parking a car there. This seems to make sense, but it could be an exhausting travel day: Chicago to Barcelona via London, then a train to Girona. Any advice is much appreciated!

It is very easy : take the RENFE train at the airport (Terminal 2B), it stops at Sants Station.

Thank you! You answered an important question. Next step: we'll check the frequency of trains from Barcelona to Girona.

There are also buses from Barcelona airport to Girona. If the timing works out, that might be easier than going to Sants station to transfer to Girona.

The problem is that those buses go to Girona airport and not to Girona center. There are buses from Girona airport to the center but they might not be as convenient as the train from Sants Station.

Pvoyageuse, there are buses from the Barcelona airport to the Girona bus station, but only a few a day, so the timing has to work. The bus is operated by Sagales.
