My husband and I have retired las year and we love travelling, but not as a tourist all the time… we like to rent an apartment and stay at a town 2 or 3 months so that we can feel the spirits and the culture. We’ve been in Lyon for 5 months, in Palermo for 3 months and we are now in Montreal.
We are thinking about going to bristol next april, may, june. Can someone give us some tips ? Like best neighborhood, how is public transportation( we are pedestrians), are people friendly,... we intend to travel around a bit, by train, but our main interest is live the day to day of Bristol.

It's a great city. Very arty, very busy, bit rough around the edges, very multi-cultural in parts.

Good buses. Lots of history. VERY hilly.

Bristol is an amazing city! There is always something on to keep you busy. Clifton is a really beautiful area and of course you have the Clifton Suspension Bridge which you would have to visit...as long as you are not scared of heights! Stokes Croft is great to explore, a bit more edgier, there are lots of independent cafes and bars and there is lots of street art to admire. The thing I would really look out for when you are here is the festivals, Bristol is one of the best for festivals and they come in every shape or size.
Public transport can be a bit difficult at rush hour, I would recommend walking if you can, or you could even hire bikes for the day. People are friendly! You're going to have a great trip!

We were in Bristol a couple of weeks ago and just loved it. Very lively, lots of cultural attractions, beautiful parks, easy public transportation (but also a good walking city, if hilly). I think it's a great choice based on our brief sojourn.

Do you think you'll be around in the August at all? When I was talking about festivals I forgot to mention the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, which if you are going to do any festival in Bristol it should be this one. It's really special. Ashton Court does tend to get quite busy with lots of people but there are lots of other places you could go to watch it. My favourite is up by the Suspension Bridge. I've just had a quick look and these give a good idea if you don't know the area.

If you can't manage to stay that long then in it's place I would recommend the Bristol Comedy Garden in June. I recently went to two of the shows and both evenings were fantastic.
