3* hotel Milan $3/night -- now what?

I got this great error rate on travelocity (I posted it when I found it a couple days ago) for a hotel in Milan that I booked for 4 nights at $13.25 USD all in. I'm trying to use my FF United miles for ORD-MIL but I have a question.

After my 4 nights, I'd like to take a train to Venice or Florence (looks like $25-30 o/w) and pay for 2 additional nights of hotel (I realize this will cost more than 3 dollars a night...) I'm hoping United will book an open jaw award ticket for me so I can fly back to the states from Venice or Florence. Do you have any suggestions about which city might be a more convenient destination with respect to near-by airports, etc? Any suggestions about how you might proceed would be very appreciated. My vacation days are very flexible and numerous but I don't have much money these days.

Hi f,

Lucky you.

When are you going? Florence FLR will be closed from about mid-Feb to mid-May.

Irrespective of your flights, I would go to Venice.

If you get an open-jaw flight, I suggest going to Venice first. The schedules out of Milan are much better.

Otherwise, you can train from Venice SL to Milan Centrale and take the bus to Milan Malpensa in about 4:30 hr.

Lucky for you to get $3/night in expensive Milano! Just wanted to say that and also that your trip sounds great especially since it will be practically free.

UA's main partner in Europe is Lufthansa. They serve lots of Italian cities, including Pisa, Verona & Bologna - in addition to Milan, Venice, Florence (which is to be closed).

All are possibilites.

thanks for the responses -- I'm going to check with UA to see if they have flights in/out of Pisa.

What little research I've done makes me feel like Venice might be a honeymoon type destintion - lots of couples, not as bustling and active -- is this a misperception? I'm likely to be travelling alone and so I'd enjoy an urban space with active public spaces and a range of things to see and do. Why would you choose Venice over Florence? The flights out of Venice are more convenient but I'd be willing to do the one hour trek to the Pisa airport if Florence is the better city for me.

The Albergo Hotel Panorama Firenze (anyone know it?) is only 55 E/night so I may try to stay 3 evenings -- got good reviews on tripadvisor. TIA
