My DH and I (ages 27/30) went to Europe for our second wedding anniversary last March and spent four wonderful days in Rome. While we didn't try to fit in everything you have on your list, we felt we had plenty of time to see all the major sites and still had time to sit, relax, and soak up the city. Be prepared though, because your feet and legs will ache like never before. In order to see even the big stuff, you will walk miles and miles every day. I *highly* recommend the night walk tour in Rick Steve's book. It will take you to all the major sites, which look completely different at night, and there are no crowds. I have a picture of my DH standing in front of the Pantheon without another sole around. We loved the restaurant the book recommended as a starting point for the tour and if you do it, don't forget to pick up a bottle of vino rosso from the street vendor by the Trevi Fountain to get you through the last part of the tour! Oh, and the night tour actually ends at the Spanish Steps so if that's where you're staying, you'd be set! Here's a rough itenerary of our Rome trip:
Day 1: Arrived very late due to delayed flight from US and missed connection in Paris. Wondered around the streets by our hotel, had a lovely dinner and called it a night.
Day 2: St. Peter's in Chains
Colloseum
Arch of Constantine
Palentine Hill
Forum
Exited Capital Steps to have lunch at 1:00 p.m. at Vecchia Roma, Piazza Campitelli 18.
Continued on to Complesso del Vitoriano (note: do not go into the museum half way up the stairs because they won't let you back out. The exit takes you all the way back to the bottom)
Evening: Rick Steve's night tour!
Day 3: Vatican
Sistine Chapel
St. Peter's Bascilica
Night - Anniversary dinner at Mirabella with fantastic views of the city!
Day 4: Galleria Borghese (be sure to make reservations)
Baths of Diocletian
Santa Maria Degli Angeli Church
Castel Sant Angelo
No matter what you end up doing, I'm sure you will love Rome. We sure did!
