3 days in Northern Italy

Two of us have 3 days in Northern Italy and are looking for alternatives. We will land in Milan on Wednesday, May 19 and the only committment we have is to be in Venice on Saturday, May 22. During a past trip we spent 2 days in Milan and 2 days in Como. We were wondering if renting a car in Milan and driving towards Portofino and the Itlaian Riviera would be a good idea? We like sightseeing and also enjoy a festive atmosphere. What are the highlights of such a venture? Are there "reasonably priced" accomdations ($150 per night) in this region?

Although I haven't been to Northern Italy yet (I will be there the same time you are!), it seems there are lots of great places on the way to Venice: Verona, Vicenza, Padova, and many smaller towns in the Dolomites. You'd spend less time traveling than if you went the opposite direction. Bologna isn't that far out of the way either; since it's a big university town it may be more hip, if that's what you're looking for.

Santa Margarita is a fun lively area that is just before Portofino. It should be good weather too in May, so bring your swim suit. There are a few hotels that you could stay at. Check expedia for rates. Hotel Jolanda is one with low rates however it's not along the coast but inland. There are lots of options though, this is only one.
I'd reccommend going there. I go myself very often.
Ciao,
Melissa
