3 Days in Naples...

Hello All

I'm visiting Naples in Sept for 3 days and am interested in visiting Pompeii & Vesuvius, Capri Islands and Blue Grotto and Amalfi Coast as a day trip.

I'll reach Naples in morning from Rome on first day and have a flight from Naples at 1915h on third day - so thats the time I have.

I have a few questions :

1. Is it possible to do all this within my limited time ?
2. If not what all should I do ?
3. Which is a better place to stay Sorrento or Naples (near Train station) ?
4. What are starting points for ferries to Capri Island ?
5. Is it possible to walk the place or should I hire a motobike/vespa ? (Is it safe to ride)

With basically two days, I would give Capri a miss. You will need a full day to do Pompeii and Vesuvius. You could easily spend another day in Naples doing the museums and the catacombs. In my view, it would be too rushed to bring in Capri into the picture.

Or stay at Sorrento and do a ferry viewing to Amalfi and a day at Pompeii/Vesuvius. Skip Naples!

We were there last month and spent 3 nights in Naples and 4 in Amalfi and still didn't manage to do all that we wanted to!

If you are likely to be in Naples train station early on Day1,I would consider pushing onward to Pompeii, using the local train service or Campania Express. You need to check about luggage storage at Pompeii.
Moving onward to Sorrento gives you the option of an early morning ferry on Day2 to Capri and a full day to explore as much of the island as you are able for; last ferry back leaves after 18.30 I think.
For Day 3, I would suggest the first Coast-to-coast bus to Positano at 08.45, timing your return to coordinate with the Currieri bus timetable for the airport shuttle that offers you a non-stop service from Sorrento train station to the airport terminal. Staying somewhere in Sorrento close to the station would simplify matters in terms of your luggage when transferring to the airport.

IMO, no, that's too much for your time -- but I could be wrong!

Depending on when, exactly, you would reach Naples, and how fully committed you are to Vesuvius (which I would skip, but it's not my trip), then tongas's suggestion to push on to Pompeii makes a lot of sense. Unless things have changed recently, there is a luggage storage area at the main entrance to Pompeii.

For the time you have, staying in Naples is worth considering. That way you can decide, based on the weather, whether to try to visit Capri (visiting the Blue Grotto is not always an option because of weather, tides, etc.) or visit the Amalfi Coast or savor the many delights of Naples itself -- including the magnificent archeological museum, which houses the many articles that were removed from Pompeii. That said, I adore Naples; many people do not. (It is, apparently, a love-it-or-hate-it kind of place).

Hope that helps!

I would not visit the Vesuvius, it is a long walk and you don't see very much. Instead of the Vesuvius you better go to Puzzuoli (Naples) there you can find the Solfatara, you walk direct into the crater. It is realy worthful!!

I've not visited this area (yet - due to visit nearby next year!) but I would say that all that is way too much for one day trip.

If I was in Naples for 3 days, I would personally spend 2 days in Naples and 1 on a day-trip to EITHER Pompeii, Capri OR Amalfi coast, but you may wish to do 1 day in Naples, 1 day in Pompeii and then 1 day in either Capri or Amalfi coast.
